For the past 45 years, I have tried to stay out of political discussions. My focus has been on declaring Jesus as Lord and Savior, and giving people evidence to help them make a decision to trust in Christ for their salvation.

I didn’t vote for Donald Trump in the 2016 election because I was working in the Philippines to rebuild homes for poor fishermen who lived on a remote island who had been devastated by a category 5 Super-Typhoon.

I studied the entrance of Donald Trump into the world of politics and listened intently to all that he said and watched what he did. Like many people, I didn’t always like what the man said, and often I did not appreciate some of his comments about certain subjects.

I also noticed that President Trump was a man who kept his promises. He said he would turn the economy around, he did. He said he would lower taxes, he did. He said he would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, he did. He said that he would work to restore religious liberty in the United States, it has happened. Most reasonable persons care more about what a person does, than what they say.

Most politicians that have made promises during my 64 years on earth, do not do what they say. This president has been different. Still. I wish that our president was better in his communication skills.

Leaders That God Chooses

In the last year I began a review of my studies for two men from ancient history; King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and King Cyrus of the Persians. I remembered a chapter that I had written in 2013 in one of my books that describes the relationship these two kings had with the God of the Bible. Surprising to many people, God called these two pagan kings to serve Him, though they didn’t know Him. We see many places in the Bible where God calls men and women to serve Him, who are people of disrepute and live immoral lives. Many people in the world today ask how this can be possible. Case in point: President Donald Trump.

When we examine the Bible we see many people who are described in unsavory terms. These people were changed by coming to a knowledge of who God is, and they were transformed by knowing Him as He called them to serve Him.

Every major person from the Old Testament had problems. The Bible is brutally honest with us regarding the character and behavior of the individuals that it records. We are allowed to see these people with all of their sins and flaws, and observe how God took them as they were and changed them into a new person by coming into a personal relationship with Him.

Old Testament

• Adam disobeyed God.
• Noah was a drunkard.
• Jonah was obstinate.
• Moses had a speech impediment.
• Abraham was a liar, lacked faith in the beginning.
• Isaac was a liar.
• Jacob was a deceiver.
• Tamar was a prostitute.
• David was an adulterer and murderer.
• Joseph was arrogant.
• Gideon was afraid.
• Rahab was a prostitute.
• Samson was a womanizer.
• Rahab was a prostitute.
• Jeremiah was a failure in all his efforts.
• Elijah was suicidal.
• Naomi was a bitter widow.
• Job lost all his worldly possessions.

New Testament

• Peter was impulsive and quick tempered, easily changed his mind.
• Simon was materialistic; his concerns were centered around money and property.
• James was seemingly insignificant to most men, called “the younger.”
• Andrew was very insecure; the brother of Peter, a loner, dependent on his family.
• John was prideful, called himself “the disciple whom Jesus loved”; wanted to call fire down from heaven to destroy those who opposed him.
• Phillip was a perfectionist, a bit of a control freak, who was calculating and inquisitive.
• Nathanael was skeptic and opinionated. When he was told that the Messiah had been found, Jesus of Nazareth, Nathanael said: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
• Thomas, known as the “doubter,” was skeptical and cynical. A man very suspicious of the things people claim, he wanted proof before he believed anything.
• James, the elder, stubborn and unwilling to bend.
• Matthew was hated by most people because he was formerly a Roman tax collector.
• Thaddeus was a man who was constantly wavering between his beliefs and often had ulterior motives for what he did.
• Judas betrayed Jesus, though he pretended to love Him and be His friend.
• Paul was a former murderer of Christians; rich, influential, and intellectual.

We can see from the above list that God is no respecter of persons. He uses people who have a heart to listen to Him and do what He says. He is resistant to scoffers, critics, and those who will not do what He said.

Nebuchadnezzar and Cyrus

Concerning a President, government leader, or a king such as Nebuchadnezzar and Cyrus, God does use immoral, unrighteous men and women. When the Lord wrote that Cyrus would serve Him, this must have sounded very strange to the Persian King.

Isaiah the prophet wrote in chapter 45 of his book that God knew Cyrus before he was born, and called him by name. King Cyrus was born in 590 B.C. Isaiah wrote his prophecy of Cyrus in chapter 45, in 740 B.C., 150 years before Cyrus was born.

This is what the Lord says to Cyrus, his anointed one, whose right hand he will empower. Before him, mighty kings will be paralyzed with fear. Their fortress gates will be opened, never to shut again. This is what the Lord says: “I will go before you, Cyrus, and level the mountains. I will smash down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness—secret riches. I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name. “And why have I called you for this work? Why did I call you by name when you did not know me? It is for the sake of Jacob my servant, Israel my chosen one. I am the Lord; there is no other God. I have equipped you for battle, though you don’t even know me, so all the world from east to west will know there is no other God. I am the Lord, and there is no other. I create the light and make the darkness. I send good times and bad times. I, the Lord, am the one who does these things. ~Isaiah 45:1-7 (NLT)

When Cyrus conquered Babylon, Daniel the prophet was still alive. He brought the prophecy of Isaiah 45 to King Cyrus and showed it to the King. Cyrus was so impressed with God that he did precisely what God asked him to do, set the Jews free from their captivity in Babylon and allowed them to return to their own land in Israel.

Jeremiah and Haggai predicted the invasion of Judah, by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, five years before it took place. In Jeremiah Chapter 25, the prophet said that Judah would be in captivity at Babylon for seventy years. In 605 B.C., Nebuchadnezzar began the captivity of Judah. Precisely seventy years later, in 536 B.C., the Persian king, Cyrus, orders the Jews to return to their homeland and rebuild the second Temple. Construction does not begin  for another 17 years, in 520 B.C. Just three years later, the Temple is completed in 517 B.C.

Nebuchadnezzar was call the “anointed” of the Lord, and, His “shepherd.” By his interaction with the God of Israel, also through Daniel the prophet, Nebuchadnezzar became a believer in the God of the Hebrews and honored Him during his remaining life.

“Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honor the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble the proud.” ~Daniel 4:37 (NLT)

The point of this is that God often uses bad men, immoral men, brutal and vicious men, to accomplish His will and purposes. God does not approve of the actions of evil men, but He also knows the hearts of these men and that they can be changed by coming into a relationship with Him.

Just last week, in a discussion I had with a critic of Christians and the God of the Bible, a person told me that “you Christians should know better than to choose an immoral man like Trump to be your leader.” He proceeded to list many of the well known sins of Donald Trump and asked me how I could support a man like this. I explained that God had used men like Donald Trump before, who were far more immoral, and we should never limit what God can do, simply because we don’t think a particular person is fit to be a leader.

God does not choose people based upon the same criteria that we humans use. God looks at the heart of a person and not at their outward appearance or actions. From God’s perspective, we are all sinners and we are all separated from Him by our sins. He also knows that by one simple act of faith, as a person decides to trust in Jesus as their Savior, they can enter into a new relationship with God, and by this new relationship, they can be changed. It is for this reason that we see, in the Bible, that God can use any person who is willing and will listen to Him.

If God rejected all sinners and could not use anyone who was immoral, then God would never be able to accomplish anything in this world of sinners. Every one of us are separated from God because of our sins; we are all the same. Donald Trump’s sins are no worse than my sins or your sins. God’s standard is perfection, and since all of us are incapable of being perfect, we are all the same before God: lost, with no hope of redemption.

This was the reason that Jesus came and died for us. He paid for all of our sins, and took our place at the judgement for sins that we deserved. When any person decides to trust in Jesus, God takes away their sin record and makes them perfect, ready for heaven.

God’s Purpose For Donald Trump

I do not pretend to have some special knowledge about Donald Trump, or who will win the 2020 Presidential Election. What I do know is that for more than 50 years, Christians have been praying for a leader in the United States who would help our nation turn back to God, and stop the flood of immorality that has swept across our nation.

Some of the issues that concern Christians the most are, abortion, the normalization of same-sex immorality, adultery, and fornication, and the undermining of Christian Liberty that has been guaranteed by the United States Constitution. As believers in Jesus, we have prayed for decades for a champion who could help us with these, and many other issues. We did not imagine that a man like Donald Trump would be that man, but God chose Him to do these very things.

If we examine the record of Donald Trump during his first term of office, he has done more to help stop the murder of the unborn, limit the laws that permit the persistent same-sex agenda, and restore the liberty of Christians to worship God in the public and private places of our country, than any president before him. No president has stood up for Israel and the Jews like Donald Trump. The progress we have made in the past four years, regarding these important Christian perspectives, is beyond the successes of any former president that we have seen in the last five decades.

It is for this reason that I believe God called Donald Trump to be the 45th president of the United States. It is for this reason, and because I don’t think God is finished using Donald Trump yet, that I believe he will be re elected to a second term.

It doesn’t matter what the election polls say, it makes no difference how many people don’t like Donald Trump, what matters is that God called Him to this office and he will not be removed until he finishes what God called him to do. It does not appear to me that President Trump has achieved all that he could. For this reason, It is clear to me that President Trump will continue to serve out the next four years, to accomplish all that God has planned:

• Limitation of abortion rights.
• Limitations on same-sex immorality.
• Limitation on the persistent gay agenda
• Limitations on transgender rights which infringe on other persons rights.
• Preserving the rights of Christians to worship God and express their worship of God, as well as other religions, in every area of American life, including government.
• Lasting peace in the Middle East.

It will be interesting to watch the election results next week and see whether this idea is true. It may also be that Donald Trump’s service is over and our nation will enter a time of judgment, made possible by the election of Joseph Biden. The liberal and progressive agenda of the Democrat party will further erode, and eventually destroy the United States of America. This would indicate that God has determined a time of judgment for the nation who once glorified Him, now fallen into rebellion and abandonment of God.

Because there are so many people who still love God and serve Christ; people who have continued to pray for our nation, I don’t think we are at a place of final judgment yet.

If I am wrong that President Trump will continue in office, and Joseph Biden will become our new leader, it is for certain that there will be a return to the suppression of God in our nation and those who love Him. God will turn our country over to judgment for our constant abandonment of Him and our desire for sin and immorality.

The election of a progressive, liberal president, very well may be the precursor to the imminent seven year Tribulation described by Jesus, Daniel, and many of the other writers of the Bible. A time when two-thirds of the people on earth will die by a series of twenty-one judgments from God.

Those who say that this is, perhaps, the most important election in the history of the United States, will be proven by the results of this election. We who love the Lord and this nation, eagerly await the Lord’s decision.
