6: Genesis 12:7
365 Prophecies: Prophecy 6
The promises that God made to Abram were promises made to his Seed, the Messiah.
Old Testament Prediction:
Genesis 12:7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your seed I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
New Testament Fulfillment:
Galatians 3:16 “Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, ‘And to seeds,’ as of many, but as of one, ‘And to your Seed,’ who is Christ.”
The book of Galatians describes the fact that God was not speaking to all of Abraham’s descendants but to one specific person, the Messiah. Although the Lord was speaking to Abram who would soon become Abraham (See Prophecy 5), He was looking forward to the future in what He was speaking. God is always thinking of the big picture when it comes to His will, His plans, and His purposes. The Eternal God who spoke to Abram is not limited by the constraints of time. He sees every event that will take place over the course of all time. He moves individuals, governments, and entire nations, to accomplish His will.
Daniel 4:32 …the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.
A study in the Eternal:
When God speaks of things to come, He is describing circumstances in which He has already visited. There is nothing hidden from the Lord; therefore, the predictions that He makes come from His advanced knowledge of all things that will occur. God is not predicting the future as a man would, guessing or giving an impression or feeling about what will happen. When God speaks of a future event, He has already been there to see that event. He is simply reporting to us what has already happened.
This is so seldom understood; let me state this one additional time:
It is important to remember when considering the prophecies of the Bible, God is not predicting the future. He is simply commenting on what has already taken place. Some skeptics of Bible prophecy make comments, such as: there’s no such thing as prophecy. In the view of the skeptic, people simply wrote about things that have already taken place and then claimed that they had said them before the events took place. The reality is that this is exactly what God has done. He has already seen every single event in the history of man and therefore speaks of things that have not taken place for us here on earth, as if they had already happened.
The future is only future for those who live within the restriction of time. For God who dwells in eternity, there are no limitations. The past, present and future have already happened. For God, every event of the future is a present reality.
In Eternity, there is no linear time where one event takes place after another. In the eternal state, every event has already transpired and exists all in a single moment. Theoretically, when you arrive in heaven, your grandmother, who passed away 50 years before you, will arrive in heaven at the same moment that you arrive. All events in heaven exist at a single moment, absent of the passage of time. The Lord gave us a hint about the realities of eternity when He told Moses, I am.
Exodus 3:14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
The name I AM written in Hebrew is, “ehyeh ʾašer ʾehyeh,” the self-existent One. This meaning is similar to what Jesus defined Himself as, in the book of Revelation.
Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet; Omega is the last letter. Jesus further defines for us who He is here in Revelation 1:8 as being the beginning (Alpha) and the end (Omega), His eternal state extant of time, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.
This seems to me the best and easiest to understand definition of the self-existence of God, as defined by Jesus Himself. How can God have no beginning? It is really very simple to understand if your mind can accept the truth that eternal things have no need of a first cause. God just exists, always has, always will.
For God, all of the prophetic occurrences that He speaks of are the actual events that have already taken place. A good example of this is found in the book of Revelation Chapter 5, where all of us who love Jesus and are waiting for His return for us at the Rapture are seen already in heaven, singing a new song to the Lord.
Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation…”
What is mind blowing about this verse is that, as we read these words, we are seeing ourselves singing this song. When John observed this event, he was there singing with the entire church that has already been redeemed and is before the Lord in heaven.
Prophecy, then, is an advanced look at what has already taken place.
This is the unique capacity that God alone possesses. Only an eternal being, who has Himself made all that exists, can experience everything that is yet to happen, as if it has already taken place. For God, there is no future; all things exist in the present.
When all of the linear events in the history of man on earth have concluded, they will all be funneled down into a single arrival at eternity. In heaven, every event of human history has already happened, and you and I who love Jesus are already there with the Lord in heaven. Only as we live out our lives and wait for the conclusion of these events in the process of time, have these events yet to take place.
God speaks of things in prophecy as if they already exist, because they do.
Romans 4:17 -18 [as it is written, “I have made you (Abraham) a father of many nations”] in the presence of Him whom he believed-God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did…
“…God who calls those things which do not exist as though they did…”
It is not really that difficult for the Lord to speak of things that will happen, as though they have already taken place. This is the way that things work in eternity. The ability to tell us what will happen with great precision, is in itself, compelling evidence for the existence of God.
Scientists today struggle with the concept of a God who has no beginning. Although the materialist can conceive of matter and energy being eternal, it seems that an eternal person is out of the question. It is interesting that one theoretical astrophysicist believes the words of the Bible. Dr. Lawrence Krauss postulates that the entire universe began from nothing. These are the precise words of the first line of the Hebrew Bible: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The english word created was translated from the Hebrew word Bara, which means to create from nothing, or non existent materials. The majority of the scientific community requires that all things which exist, owe their existence to a cause. Therefore, to consider a God who has no beginning or first cause is out of the question. Of course this is exactly the point of God, that His existence is beyond the capacity of human understanding. We are limited, earthly beings, He is eternal and knows all things.
If God could entirely be understood, then it is for certain that this being would not really be God at all. The fact we know little of the God who made the universe is what we might expect, if in fact He did exist. Whatever knowledge we might gain of such a being, could only be known if He decided to reveal Himself to us. The facts are that the universe itself is the greatest evidence for the existence of God. The reality that you and I are alive today; you are reading the words that I wrote, is a pretty good indication that something marvelous happened at some point in time, to bring us into being, and allow us to live on this planet. Scientists today acknowledge freely that the chances of human life existing on any planet is impossible given the chances that a universe that would support life could exist. When the initial conditions of the universe are examined, scientists have been stunned to realize that the precise chain of events that would have had to occur from the first picoseconds of the big bang, up to the present day, must have been carefully controlled and ordered for the past 14 billion years, or none of us would be alive to observe it all.
Bible prophecy reveals the existence of God
This is the major reason that I have such a great interest in Bible prophecy. In the study of events that have, as their revelator, a mind outside of time and space, I am able to know only a particle of what God knows and comprehends regarding His total plan for all things.
Prophetic predictions only seem future to us because we live on a planet that is revolving in a 24-hour cycle for a day, located in a solar system, which moves in a circuit around a sun. Heaven has no such marking of time or delineation of events. Everything that is yet to happen for us on earth has already taken place in eternity.
When God promised Abraham that one of his descendants would bless the entire world, He was thinking ahead in time to Jesus who, in the mind of God, had already died to redeem the whole world. This is why Jesus is often spoken of as being the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Revelation 13:8 (Jesus) …the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
When God promised Abraham, in Genesis 12:7, that his descendants would possess the land of Israel, He was giving Abraham a look ahead thousands of years into the future, where God had already seen Jesus sitting on His throne in Jerusalem, ruling over the entire world during the Millennium.
Matthew 25:32 “All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.”
For God, the events that He described to Abraham about the land of Israel were already a reality in heaven.
Every single instance in the Old Testament, where God was making a future promise of blessing to Israel, Abraham’s descendants, or a reference to the land of Israel belonging to the “seed” of Abraham, God was thinking of Jesus. All of the promises of God are comprised in His Son. When we read in Galatians 3:16, that the promise was not made to Abraham’s seeds, as in the normal human descendants of Abraham, but to one specific Seed, Jesus Christ, who originated from eternity.
“Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, ‘And to seeds,’ as of many, but as of one, ‘And to your Seed,’ who is Christ.”
Jesus fulfilled the entire purpose of this 6th prophecy of the Old Testament. He came as the Seed promised to Abraham in Genesis 12, who made the redemption of Israel a reality. His promise to the whole world is that every person can enjoy the blessings of eternal life if they will trust Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
