290: Jeremiah 23:5
The Prophecies of the Messiah: Prophecy 290
The Messiah will be a descendant (a son) of David.
Old Testament Prediction:
Jeremiah 23:5 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;”
New Testament Fulfillment:
Matthew 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David…
Matthew 9:27 When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, “Son of David, have mercy on us!”
Luke 1:31-33 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.
There are at least sixteen Old Testament references to the Messiah, as the descendant or son of David. The consistent theme of all these prophecies is that David’s house, kingdom, and throne will be established forever.
By the term house, the prophecy is referring to the household or family of David who will produce a line of descendants that will lead to the throne of the Messiah. David was promised a house—a continual generation which would be established by God. The promise made to David is that the coming Messiah will be descended from his line and will rule His kingdom forever.
2 Samuel 7:16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.
This future kingdom that was assured David was established at the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The physical manifestation of this kingdom, however, was delayed until Jesus returns with His redeemed church, at the end of the seven-year Tribulation Period.
Revelation 19:14-15 And the armies in heaven (the redeemed church), clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron.
From Jerusalem, Jesus as the Messiah, will rule over the entire earth for one thousand years. When this Millennial kingdom has concluded, Jesus will continue to rule over the entire universe forever. Prophecy 320.
After the siege of Jerusalem by Titus in 70 A.D., all of the books that contained the genealogical records of all Jews were destroyed. From 70 A.D. to the present day, no one is able to prove that he is descended from David and therefore qualified to be the Messiah. After Jesus was announced to the world as the Messiah in complete fulfillment of all the Old Testament prophecies, God shut the door on all future applicants.
