121: Psalms 72:1-11
365 Prophecies: Prophecy 121
The future reign of the Messiah, predicted as a worldwide kingdom.
Old Testament Prediction:
Psalms 72:1-11 “Give the king Your judgments, O God, And Your righteousness to the king’s Son. He will judge Your people with righteousness, And Your poor with justice. The mountains will bring peace to the people, And the little hills, by righteousness. He will bring justice to the poor of the people; He will save the children of the needy, And will break in pieces the oppressor. They shall fear You As long as the sun and moon endure, Throughout all generations. He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing, Like showers that water the earth. In His days the righteous shall flourish, And abundance of peace, Until the moon is no more. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth. Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him, And His enemies will lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and of the isles Will bring presents; The kings of Sheba and Seba Will offer gifts. Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; All nations shall serve Him.”
New Testament Fulfillment:
Luke 1:31-33 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Revelation 19:10-16 “…For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
The fact of the Messiah’s reign over the earth is well established in the Old Testament. The generations of man’s sin and evil will be brought to an end. Murder and death will exist no more. All the nations of the earth will serve and obey God’s Son, and to Him will be committed all judgment and rulership.
Psalms 72:1-11 describes the Son who will have dominion from sea to sea and from rivers to the ends of the earth. Finally, all kings shall fall down before Him; all nations shall serve Him.
The kingdom that David is predicting is the same kingdom that was promised to Jesus at His birth.
“His name is JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
When Jesus returns with His church at the end of the seven-year Tribulation, He will immediately set up His kingdom. The nations of the world will be divided into two categories: those who treated the nation of Israel kindly during the previous seven years—designated as sheep; and those who were cruel, and persecuted God’s people—classified as goats. The sheep will be permitted to enter the kingdom age; the goats—cast into hell.
Matthew 25:31-33 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.”
Matthew 25:34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world…”
Matthew 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels…’ ”
Upon the completion of this judgment, the Lord will begin the promised kingdom of David’s Son, the Messiah, who will reign over the earth for one thousand years; and finally, the universe—forever. The confirmation of this promised Kingdom is made by many and diverse prophecies from the Old Testament.
