The Approaching Rapture: What Is It? Who Will Be Taken? What Will Happen After?

What Is The First Resurrection? What Is The Second Resurrection? Why Will The Resurrection Happen At The Rapture?

Jesus promised a future resurrection when everyone who loves Him and trusts in the salvation He paid for with His life will take place. What many people don’t understand about the approaching Rapture is that this event is the resurrection Jesus and the New Testament writers describe in these 27 books:

  • 47 times in the New Testament
  • 20 times by Jesus in the Gospels

Why Is The Rapture Necessary? Why Must Jesus Remove All Believers In Him Who Are On Earth, Before The Tribulation Begins?

  1. The Rapture is the end of the church age; the “Times of the Gentiles.”
  2. The Tribulation is the completion of the salvation of the Jews (all Israel will be saved).
  3. The Rapture is the Resurrection that Jesus promised all believers.
  4. The Tribulation is the judgment that Jesus promised the world.
  5. Because the Tribulation is the “Wrath of the Lamb,” and Jesus’ church is not appointed to experience His wrath, but His salvation, they cannot be on earth during the Tribulation.
  6. During the Tribulation Jesus will bring 21 judgments to earth by 7 Seals, 7 Trumpets, 7 Bowls, resulting in the death of two-thirds of the people on earth.
  7. We find Jesus’ church in heaven already, in Revelation chapters 4 and 5. The Tribulation begins in chapter 6. We don’t see the church on earth any longer from Revelation chapters 6-18.

Many people criticize the term “Rapture.” They say this word is not found in the Bible. They say that the Christian church didn’t teach the doctrine of the Rapture until the 1800s.

  1. In the Latin translation of 1 Thessalonians 4:17, the term used for “caught up” is “Rapturo.”
  2. The Rapture is a term used by people to describe what Paul described in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, where ” For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up (Harpazo) together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”
  3. I have records in my library and have included these records in several of my books, that documents the Christian church has taught the doctrine of the Rapture, ever since Paul first taught this to the Christian church early in the first century.

When Paul reveals the event called the Rapture, the Koine Greek Harpazo, the moment that every true believer in Jesus is taken from the earth, to meet Jesus in the outer atmosphere of Earth, no one knew about this event until Paul recorded it in his first letter to the Christians at Thessalonica.

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. “

How Did Paul Know The Details of this Event?

Jesus appeared to Paul while he was on the road to Damascus, Syria (Acts 9) not long after Jesus had risen from the dead. Sometime after Jesus’ resurrection, Paul carried letters with Him to arrest Christians, followers of “The Way.”In Acts chapter 9 Luke records this event.

In Acts chapter 26, Paul recounts what happened when Jesus appeared before him on the road to Damascus. Later in in Acts 26 and 1 Corinthians 9, Paul states clearly that he “saw Jesus with his own eyes.”

Luke in Acts 9:3-5 “As Paul was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?” “Who are you, lord?” Saul asked. And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting!

Paul recounts Acts 26:12-16  “One day I was on such a mission to Damascus, armed with the authority and commission of the leading priests. About noon, Your Majesty, as I was on the road, a light from heaven brighter than the sun shone down on me and my companions. We all fell down, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is useless for you to fight against my will.’ “‘Who are you, lord?’ I asked. “And the Lord replied, ‘I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting. Now get to your feet! For I have appeared to you to appoint you as my servant and witness. Tell people that you have seen me, and tell them what I will show you in the future.”

Paul described in 1 Corinthians 9:1 “Am I not as free as anyone else? Am I not an apostle? Haven’t I seen Jesus our Lord with my own eyes?”

Paul did not immediately begin his public ministry, he spent 17 years with Jesus being prepared. During that time Jesus revealed 18 “Mysteries” that he reveals to us in his letters.[1] Chief among these mysteries—things that were never known before—Paul tells us about the event of the Rapture and what will happen.

Paul told the Christians at Thessalonica that when Jesus comes suddenly (like a thief), Everyone who trust in Him for their salvation (living and dead) will be “caught up to meet Jesus in the air.” Paul told the early Christian church that this event is the fulfillment of God’s promise to raise every believer from the dead when Jesus comes for us.

What Is The First Resurrection?

A part of Jesus’ promise to everyone who is sorry for their sins, repents from their sins, and trusts in Him for the rest of their life, is that though they die, they will live forever, if they continue to trust in Jesus for their salvation. When Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha had died, notices what Jesus told Martha:

John 11:25-26 “Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”

In the Apostle John’s Gospel narrative of Jesus, he records the precise words of Jesus in chapter 14 regarding Jesus’ promise to resurrect every person who trust in Him for their salvation:

John 14:1-3 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”

In 1 Thessalonians Paul tells the Christians at that church, precisely how this resurrection of every true believer in Jesus will happen:

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 “And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died. 15 We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. 18 So encourage each other with these words.”

V-13 Jesus addresses a concern that the believers at Thessalonica regarding when the resurrection will take place. The people were confused because after Paul had taught them about the resurrection, false teachers came into the church and began to teach that the Day of the Lord had already happened. These dear people wandered what had happened to their loved ones who had not been raised from the dead. Paul writes this letter to clear up the confusion of the Day of The Lord, and when the resurrection will take place.

V-14 Paul restates the fact that we who love Jesus, believe that He was crucified for our sins and that He rose on the third daya from the dead. Paul had already told them that when Jesus returns He will be bringing with Him, all those who had died. The Bible teaches that every human being is primarily an eternal spirit created by God. When our body dies the spirit is released and goes either to Sheol, the place of the dead, to await judgment, or to Paradise/Heaven when they live with the Lord. Before Jesus died for all sins, every person who trusted in Yahweh for their salvation, went into the center of the earth to a place called “Paradise,” described by Jesus in Luke chapter 16:

Luke 16:19-31 “Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. 20 At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores. 21 As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores. 22 “Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side. 24 “The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’ 25 “But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.’ 27 “Then the rich man said, ‘Please, Father Abraham, at least send him to my father’s home. 28 For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don’t end up in this place of torment.’ 29 “But Abraham said, ‘Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read what they wrote.’
30 “The rich man replied, ‘No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and turn to God.’ 31 “But Abraham said, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

When Jesus was on the cross there were two thieves on either side of Him who were being punished for their crimes. One mocked Jesus, the other said to Him:

Luke 23:42-43 “Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” 43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

The moment Jesus and this man who trusted in Jesus while on the cross, died, they both went to the place Jesus described in Luke 16, Paradise. After Jesus rose from the dead He descended into this place He spoke of in Luke 16, and took all those who had been trusting in Yahweh for their salvation, with Him as He ascended into heaven.

After Jesus rose from the dead and defeated death, Paradise was closed, and all those who died trusting in Yahweh for their salvation, went to heaven to be with the Lord, not to paradise. These saved persons exist in heaven today as spirit beings. What Paul is describing in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, is the moment when Jesus comes again to the outer atmosphere of earth and brings all the saved, who exist as eternal spirits, with Jesus to be reunited with their perfect, eternal body, at the Rapture.

1 Thessalonians 4:14 “…God will bring back with him the believers who have died…16 First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.”

Paul expounds on this events where Jesus arrives at the outer athmosphere of earth, raised the dead believers, and transforms them with all the living believers, into imortal, perfect beings who will live with the Lord forever:

1 Corinthians 15:51-55 “But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! 52 It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. 53 For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies. 54 Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

Notice the similarities between the text of 1 Thessalonians 4 and 1 Corinthians 15: “

1 Thessalonians 4:16: “First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.”

1 Corinthians 15:52: “Those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.”

Revelation Chapter 20 says that this is the “First Resurrection.”

Revelation 20:6  “Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power.”

This is an interesting statement in chapter 20 of Revelation because these texts describe people who are killed during the last three and a half years of the seven year Tribulation:

Revelation 20:4-6 “Then I saw thrones, and the people sitting on them had been given the authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus and for proclaiming the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his statue, nor accepted his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They all came to life again, and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years. This is the first resurrection. (The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years had ended.) 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years.”

People who are saved during the seven year Tribulation will all be killed by the antichrist, (v-4) “beheaded for their testimony about Jesus.” Even though they die several years after the Rapture when the first resurrection takes place, these Christians killed during the last half of the Tribulation are still counted as a part of the first resurrection.

If you wait to be saved until after the Rapture happens, before the Tribulation begins, you will be killed. If you can’t trust in Jesus now and live for Him today when there is no penalty of death for believing (in most places of the world), how are you going to die for Him during the Great Tribulation? It will be very hard to be saved after the Rapture takes place. It is better right now to commit or recommit your life to Jesus, than it will be once the Rapture takes place.

What Is The Second Death?

Revelation 20:4-6 states: “Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years.”

Every person who is born on earth can experience a second birth, by confessing their sins to Jesus and asking Him to forgive and save them (John 3:3). Jesus said these people are “born again,” by the Holy Spirit.

All of these persons will be a part of the First Resurrection. There is also a Second Resurrection of those who refused to repent of their sins and died in those

How Do I Get Saved According To Jesus?

In John chapter 3 Jesus met with the most esteemed religious teacher in Israel, Nicodemus. In that meeting Nicodemus told Jesus that he knew that Jesus was sent by God. Jesus responded with a stunning statement: “You must be Born Again.”

These words confused Nicodemus. He thought that simply obeying the Law of Moses and being obedient to God would grant him eternal life. Jesus said, “no, you must be born again by the Spirit of God.” What did Jesus mean?

Jesus said that being born again by the Holy Spirit is a work that is similar to the wind. We can’t see where it came from or where it is going, but we can see what it does. When a person hears that Jesus died for sinners to give us eternal life, this gives us the opportunity to be a part of the First Resurrection and miss the Second Death.

  1. We come to Jesus and ask Him to forgive our sins
  2. He hears us and if we are sincere, He will forgive us and give us eternal life.
  3. This is a work of the Holy Spirit because it is the Spirit who convinces us of our need to be forgiven, and convicts us of our guilt because all of us have sinned.
  4. When we pray and ask the Lord to take away our sins and give us eternal life, He does.
  5. It is the Holy Spirit that comes to live inside us when we are sorry for our sins and ask Jesus to take our sins away and be our Lord and Savior.
  6. This is the process of being born again by the Spirit of God.
  7. All of these people who have asked Jesus to forgive their sins and come into their life, are born again, and will be a part of the First Resurrection, and they will miss the Second Death.

What Is The Second Resurrection?

If a person lives their entire life but refuses to turn from their sins and trust in Jesus for their salvation, they die while still in their sins. The pardon for all sins that God offers every person is only good until we die. After we die in our sins it is too late to accept the offer of salvation Jesus offers every person. These people who die in their sins, will not be raised in the First Resurrection. They will be raised at the end of the one thousand year reign of Jesus on the earth at the Second Resurrection. These persons will all be found guilty of rejecting the only plan of salvation that God has offered the world: repentance from all sins, and an acceptance of Jesus as their Savior.

Revelation chapter 20 describes a “Great White Throne” where every person who rejected Jesus as their Savior during their life on earth will appear. All of these persons will be found guilty of their sins, and placed into “The Lake of Fire.” This is the literal Hell that many people think of when they hear that term.

This is the Second Death

At death the unbeliever is held in the prison of Sheol, the place of the unsaved dead. They await the future judgment that is seem in Revelation 20:

Revelation 20:11-15 “And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, there was no other place for them. 12 I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. 14 Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. 15 And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.”

“There Was No Other Place For Them”

People who arrive at God’s Great White Throne, have been given every opportunity to have their sins forgive and removed from their record. These people refused the only person born on earth who lived a sinless life and was qualified to die for their sins, Jesus. Having rejected the only way that God could save them, there is “no other place for them.” These person will live in the Lake of Fire forever.

Summary: First and Second Resurrection; First and Second Death

The First Resurrection

The First Resurrection refers to the resurrection of the saved (born again)—those who belong to God through their trust in Jesus Christ for their salvation. This is a resurrection unto life.

Scriptures:

  • Revelation 20:4–6 “This is the first resurrection. The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years had ended. Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years.”
  • John 5:28–29 “…those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life…”
  • 1 Corinthians 15:20–23 “Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back.”

This event Involves only the saved. Each is given a Glorified, immortal body like the one that Jesus had after His resurrection. (1 Cor. 15:42–44).

This event takes place in stages:

  1. Christ the Firstfruits (already risen)
  2. Church-age believers at the Rapture (1Thess. 4:16–17)
  3. Tribulation martyrs and Old Testament saints at Christ’s return (Rev. 20:4; Dan. 12:2)

The Second Resurrection

The Second Resurrection is the resurrection of the unsave—people who rejected the salvation Jesus offered to every person born on earth. This second resurrection is a resurrection unto judgment.

Scriptures:

  • Revelation 20:11–13 “I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened… And the dead were judged according to what they had done…”
  • John 5:29 “…those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment.”
  1. The Second Resurrection takes place after the one thousand year reign of Jesus on Earth.
  2. The Second Resurrection is for the unsaved.
  3. The Second Resurrection Ends with the eternal separation of the person who rejected the salvation Jesus offered, determined by Jesus at the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20).

The First Death

The First Death is the separation of the soul/spirit from the body—the physical death all people experience unless alive at the Rapture.

Scriptures:

  • Hebrews 9:27 “And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment…”
  • Genesis 3:19 “For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.”
  1. The First Death will happen to all humans, except for those alive when Jesus comes for His church, according to 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Romans 5:12).
  2. The First Death is the physical body, not the final event that involves the eternal spirit of each person.
  3. The First Death is temporary, because the person who dies without having their sins taken away by Jesus, goes to Sheol (Hell) where they are kept in that prison until the end of Jesus reign over the earth for one thousand years.

The Second Death

The Second Death is eternal separation from God in the lake of fire. It is the final destiny of every person who rejects the salvation Jesus offered them during their physical life on earth.

Scriptures:

  • Revelation 20:14–15  “Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death.”
  • Revelation 21:8 “…their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
  1. The Second Death is Eternal Death (Matt. 25:46).
  2. The Second Death is the Conscious separation of the unsaved person from God’s presence forever.
  3. The Second Death will not happen to people who repent of their sins, trust in Jesus for all of their life. They will be a part of the First Resurrection (Rev. 20:6).

“If you are born once, you will die twice; if you are born twice, you will die only once.”

Born once (physical only, never spiritually reborn):

  • You experience physical death (the first death).
  • You also experience eternal separation from God (the second death).
  • This means you will experience Two deaths; one physical, a second, spiritual

Born twice (physical birth + spiritual rebirth in Christ):

  • You may experience physical death (unless alive at the Rapture).
  • But you will never experience the second death (spiritual death).
  • This means you will experience only One death only.

This is precisely what Jesus taught in John 3:3, 7 “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God… You must be born again.”

Also in John 11:25–26 “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.”

  • First Resurrection → Life for the saved.
  • Second Resurrection → Judgment for the unsaved.
  • First Death → Physical separation of body and spirit.
  • Second Death → Eternal separation from God in the lake of fire.
  • The believer, “born twice,” will never taste the second death.

Why Will The Resurrection Happen At The Rapture?

The Resurrection at the Rapture: What It Means

The resurrection at the Rapture is the moment when believers who have died in Christ are raised with glorified bodies, and those who are alive are transformed instantly and caught up together with them to meet Jesus in the air.

This is the next great prophetic event in God’s plan for the Church.

The Link Between The Feast Of Trumpets And The Rapture

Scriptures: The Rapture Defined 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.”

  • “The Christians who have died” = resurrection of the dead in Christ.
  • “We who are alive… will be caught up” = living believers translated.

Transformation of the Living

1 Corinthians 15:51–52 “But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.”

This text links the resurrection directly to the Rapture event.

Why the Resurrection Happens at the Rapture

The Unity of the Church

  • The Church is one body (Eph. 4:4).
  • Jesus cannot return for a fractured body—some dead, some alive, some glorified, some not.
  • The resurrection at the Rapture completes the Church, uniting all believers of the Church Age, past and present, into one glorified assembly to present to Himself (Eph. 5:27).

Fulfillment of Jesus’ Promise

  • Jesus promised in John 14:2–3 “When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”
  • The resurrection at the Rapture is how Christ fulfills this promise: retrieving His bride, both living and dead, into His presence.

Victory Over Death

  • 1 Cor. 15:54–55 “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
  • The resurrection at the Rapture is the decisive moment when the sting of death is erased for the Church.

The “First Resurrection” Phases

  1. Christ, the firstfruits (1 Cor. 15:20).
  2. The Church at the Rapture.
  3. Later: Tribulation martyrs and Old Testament saints at Christ’s return (Rev. 20:4).
  4. The Rapture resurrection is the central harvest of the First Resurrection.

The Distinction Between Israel and the Church

  • God has separate prophetic programs:
  • Israel’s resurrection occurs at the end of the Tribulation (Dan. 12:2).
  • The Church’s resurrection occurs at the Rapture, before the Tribulation, because the Church is not appointed to wrath (1 Thess. 5:9).

The resurrection occurs at the Rapture because:

  1. Completion of the Body of Christ – all believers made whole and glorified together.
  2. Fulfillment of Christ’s Personal Promise – “I will come and receive you.”
  3. Demonstration of Victory Over Death – the Church’s triumph is revealed in glory.
  4. Separation of God’s Programs – distinguishes the destiny of the Church from Israel and the world.
  5. Beginning of the Heavenly Union – the bride of Christ is gathered for the Marriage of the Lamb (Rev. 19:7–9).

The resurrection at the Rapture is God’s way of bringing the entire Church—living and dead—into glorified union with Christ at one appointed moment, before the Tribulation and before Christ returns in judgment with His saints.

A prophetic timeline chart showing the sequence of the First Resurrection phases:

  1. Christ the Firstfruits (~32 AD) – the beginning of resurrection life.
  2. Church at the Rapture (Future) – the central harvest of believers, both dead and alive.
  3. Tribulation Martyrs (Rev. 20:4) – raised at Christ’s return.
  4. Old Testament Saints (Dan. 12:2) – also raised at the end of the Tribulation.

  1. The Day (of the Lord) fast approaches. Hallowed be Your Name. Let Your Kingdom come. Let Your Will be done on Earth as in the Heavens. What more needs to be said that is not already known. Amen.
