In the previous chapter, we learned how God intended that His word would be our only guide in life. The words that men write are transient, shallow, and insufficient. The word of God was given to us so that we might gain understanding in our life. To know and comprehend what will truly bless our hearts and remain with us forever.
God has expressed His eternal love to each one of us. He sent His Son to die for our sins and He has brought Him to the earth so that we might see what God is truly like. He also made it abundantly clear that He has chosen only one way that He might be able to save us. It is a plan that He formulated before time existed. He chose to save the descendants of Adam, by a work of salvation that He alone would accomplish. He did this so that none of us could ever boast, or take credit for what God has done.
Salvation is a free gift that God has offered to every person who will simply believe what He has said. If we think that we can make a way of our own that will bring us to God, we are wrong. There is only one, perfect, and complete plan of salvation in which all people of the earth can find and know the One True and Living God.
Isaiah writes that the Messiah will be the only Savior available to all mankind.
Isaiah 43:11 “I, even I, am the LORD, And besides Me there is no savior.”
New Testament Fulfillment:
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Acts 4:10-12 “let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.
How can a person know for certain, the correct path to God? There are hundreds of religions, churches, and public speakers who claim to be the only bridge between God and man.
First, we must ask: Are there really many paths to God, or is there a single method by which God requires human beings to travel? When this question is answered by those who are uniformed and have no real knowledge of these matters, almost universally, the answer is: “All paths lead to God.” When we take the time to study the various religions of the world, we find that there is only one which stands apart from all others as logical, practical, universal, and cosmologically viable. The God of the Hebrews revealed Himself in a way that compels the reasonable person to conclude; He must be the One true God.
Let is imagine for a moment, a God who has existed forever. He has no beginning, nor will He have an end. He is unlimited in all capacities and possesses infinite wisdom and knowledge. His power is without boundaries and there is nothing which is impossible for Him. This is the God which the Bible presents to mankind. Why should we trust the God reveled by the Hebrew scriptures over the many other God’s of history? Simple. Only the God of the Bible has proven His unique qualifications as God, by presenting to us: knowledge of future events, knowledge of human nature, and knowledge of the universe, during a time when man had no ability to know these facts. The God of the Bible presents these scientific facts of the universe to us—precisely as they have existed since the beginning of the Cosmos.
1. In the beginning there was nothing, when suddenly, the universe came into existence (Genesis 1:1)
2. Time, Space, and Matter came into existence at the same precise moment (Genesis 1:1)
3. The number of stars in the universe are so great in number, they cannot be counted (Jeremiah 33:22).
4. The Sun follows a circular course through the universe. (Psalms 19:4-6).
5. The Earth is a sphere (Isaiah 40:22).
6. The Earth hangs in empty space, suspended by gravity (Job 26:7).
7. All matter in the universe is made up of invisible material, consisting of Atoms (Hebrews 11:3).
8. The invisible physiology and function of the human body (Genesis 17:12).
No other religion of the world has ever conveyed—through the writings of their scriptures—such detailed knowledge of the universe, prior to the scientific discovery of these facts by men, much later. The One True God has presented these pieces of evidence to us as proof that He is the one we who made the universe and the only one in whom we should trust.
Deuteronomy 4:35 To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD Himself is God; there is none other besides Him.
The God of the Bible claims that He is the only God and He specifically declares that He knows of no other God’s.
I know of no other God.
Isaiah 44:8 “Do not fear, nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one.”
There is no other God besides Me.
Isaiah 45:5 “I am the LORD, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me.”
There is no other Savior, except God.
Isaiah 45:21 Tell and bring forth your case; Yes, let them take counsel together. Who has declared this from ancient time? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, A just God and a Savior; There is none besides Me.
First, God says that there is no other God whom He knows.
Second, God says that there is no other God besides Him.
Third, God says that He is the only Savior.
Logically, if there is an infinite intelligence with the power to create the universe, then there could be no other being who could claim this distinction. There can only be one perfect and almighty God. All others who claim to be “God” would be lesser god’s, counterfeits and liars and would themselves—originated as a creation of the One True God. Lucifer is an example of a created being with immense power who sought the title of God—yet was denied this title and cast out of the presence of the One True God.
Isaiah 14:13 For you have said in your heart: “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ 15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.
God will not share His Glory with any other created being, nor should any created being seek such glory. This right belongs to God alone.
Isaiah 48:11 …I will not give My glory to another.
The one true God has absolute authority, and He will not share this authority with any other created being. In the case of the God revealed by the Bible, He exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three are One God. What makes these three One is their absolute unity of mind, power, and will in all things. God is perfect in every way. It is impossible that He could sin. If God could sin, if He were imperfect in any regard—He could not be God. There is nothing that He does not know. There is no knowledge that He must acquire. His perfection in all things is the reason that He alone is given the title of God.
For this reason, we must understand that the one true God is always good and magnanimous, who is forever loving, kind and gracious. God could be nothing less, or He would not be God.
If Jesus claimed to be the only Savior of the world, then He must be God, or He is a liar.
Isaiah’s prophecy is that God will send only One Savior, the Messiah. This settles all disputes regarding which way is the right way to heaven. It is clear that the only one qualified to bring us to heaven is the one who can prove that He is the Messiah.
How will He prove that He is the Messiah?
He must fulfill all the Old Testament prophecies which describe the work and ministry of the One true Savior. In this revelation, we realize just how important these prophecies are. Everything else in the Bible, in our Christian life, in this world, and in this universe; are centered around these Old Testament Prophecies of the Messiah. If we can demonstrate that any one person in the history of the world has fulfilled all of these prophecies, then this person is the Messiah and the Only Savior of the World.
This book proves that the identity of the Messiah, is the man, Jesus of Nazareth.
The only true and living God has made a singular way to heaven that all people might know and understand. It is based on the life, death, and resurrection of the Son of God—who gave Himself for all of us. God identifies and validates this person by the use of prophecy. Hundreds and even thousands of years before events are to take place, God spoke and revealed what the only Savior of the world would be like, where He would be born, what He would say, and what He would do.
Romans 4:17 …God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did…
Joshua 23:14 “Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.”
Upon careful comparison of these hundreds of Old Testament prophecies, written to introduce us to the promised Messiah; we find that Jesus perfectly fulfilled every one with one hundred percent accuracy. There is no doubt that He is the One to whom the Bible is speaking of when it makes predictions about the arrival of the Savior of the world.
Isaiah further defines the role of the Messiah, by the words of his prophecy in chapter 59:16b
The salvation of the Messiah shall be by His own arm and righteousness.
Isaiah 59:16b He saw that there was no man, And wondered that there was no intercessor; Therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him; And His own righteousness, it sustained Him.
New Testament Fulfillment:
John 6:37-40 (Jesus Speaking) “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
Isaiah speaks of the Messiah as the only way by which any person may be saved.
“Therefore His own arm brought salvation.”
The actions of redemption rest solely with the Lord and not with man. We do not have the capacity to redeem ourselves, according to the word of God. This principle makes it clear for us that no church, no religion, no man; has the ability to meet the requirements set forth by the law of God for salvation to take place.
The “arm” spoken of by Isaiah’s prophecy is the Messiah. This is a term that Isaiah has used before in describing the work and ministry of the Messiah, in Chapter 53.
Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
The Messiah is the method, by-which; God will redeem the world and offer salvation to each individual person. Jesus as the Messiah, was the arm of the Lord, before He became the Savior of the world. He was the arm, the method, whereby; God created the entire universe. He will be the arm, through which; all judgment for the earth will be committed at the end of this present age.
God, in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; Hebrews 1:2
For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, John 5:22
If any of us will find redemption; it must be by a sovereign act of the Living God. If God does not act to save us, then we will be as the angels who sinned and were found with no second chance for redemption. Thankfully, God did act. In the councils of heaven; the Son of God stepped forward to offer Himself as the redeemer of all men.
Salvation is of the Lord; it is not within the reach of any human being to redeem themselves. No good deeds can change the sin record that is already written in our book. If there is but one sin on our record, then we are disqualified for eternal life—for the law of God requires that each person keep all of the law and not fail at any single point. To fail in keeping any single part of the law is to break the whole law.
James 2:10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
Since every person has, at the very least, told a lie at some point in their life (9th commandment), therefore, we have all broken this law and are all guilty of breaking the whole law of God.
Christians love to tell others that Jesus did not come to condemn the world. What many often fail to include, is the fact that the whole world was already under the condemnation of God for their sins, and awaiting judgement. Jesus did not come to add condemnation to us; He came to offer a solution.
John 3:17-18 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
Jesus came to make His life a sacrifice that would fully extract us from our sins and remove them from our record. Jesus’ death paid the penalty that was due; thereby removing all future judgement from those who receive Jesus as their Savior.
“His own arm brought salvation for Him; And His own righteousness, it sustained Him.”
Any person can be saved who can bring himself to a point of agreement with God that they are a sinner and accept that this status cannot change unless God would help. If, however, a person loves his sin and is unwilling to turn away from from them and come to God, it is impossible for the Lord to save him. At the very least, the basis and foundation of salvation is humility, repentance, and a sincere heart that earnestly wants to be forgiven. It is useless to try and convince a person to come to Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins, until they hate those sins and want to be liberated from them.
Jesus said that the real reason that most people will not come to Him is because they love their sin. It is not that Jesus is undesirable and the thought of eternal life is not attractive. The problem is that sin has become so ingrained into our life that it is nearly impossible for us to extract ourselves from it. The problem is not with the Lord’s ability to free us but with our own unwillingness to turn from our sins.
John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
“Light” is the message that Jesus can save us, if we are willing to come to Him. “Darkness,” is the life of sin and self-will which prevents us from coming to Jesus Christ in repentance.
Repentance: “A change of the will and actions of a person, due to sincere sorrow for their sins, along with a complete turning to God for salvation.”
After 41 years of trying to tell people about Jesus, I have heard just about every excuse for why a person cannot come to the Lord and be saved. I can tell you that all of these reasons are really only empty excuses. The real obstacle that prevents many people from coming to Jesus for their salvation is due to a difficulty that John describes here in chapter 3 verse 19: People love their sin (darkness) more than they love the thought of turning from those sins and surrendering to Jesus as their Savior (light).
All of the objections for why a person will not receive Jesus as their Savior can be traced back to one underlying problem: people love their sin and they do not want to change.
For example (there are hundreds more):
Excuse: “I don’t believe that there is evidence for the existence of God.”
Answer: “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” —Romans 1:20-21
God has made himself known by all the things that exist in the universe which prove that He exists. The greatest proof of God is creation itself, and all people know this inherently in their heart; so that they are without a valid excuse to claim that God does not exist.
Real reason: A person who claims that God does not exist does so because they believe that if they can convince themselves that God does not exist, they can live anyway they chose, without guilt. Evidence of this is observed by many who claim to be atheists and claim to not believe in God; yet constantly feel the need to go on the offensive against those who do believe in God and convince them that God does not exist. In reality, what they are subconsciously attempting to do is to convince themselves that God does not exist, even though they know that He does.
Problem: A denial of God’s existence doesn’t work. All of us have an inner awareness that God exists because He made us with this knowledge. Second, all people have a conscience that reminds us constantly the difference between right and wrong.
This is why God says repeatedly that a person who claims to believe that there is no God is a “fool,” because all of the evidence that is contrary to this statement.
Psalms 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
A practical example
While writing a large portion of this book, my wife and I spent about 9 months in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Before departing for the Philippines to continue our work of ministry to the poor, I wanted to finish the writing and publication of this book. The apartment that we leased during this term has several people as residents, who live their lives in the exact fulfillment of the words of Jesus, in John 3:19.
And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil
Every day, my heart was broken for the desolation that these dear souls endured. A few are alcoholics who are so dependent on their drug of choice, that they will certainly perish from their addiction. A young man who lived near us had acquired a severe condition of his Pancreas, at just 40 years of age; due to his excessive drinking. The doctor told him that if he does not stop consuming alcohol; he will die. I would have thought that upon returning from the hospital where he nearly perished, that he would cease from drinking, ever again. Unfortunately, this young man still carries a drink in his hand, almost every day. I fear that by the time this book reaches publication, he will no longer be amongst the living. I spoke often with this couple, and told them about the Love of God and His ability to set us free from all our addictions; to a new life of freedom and joy. Not once in 9 months did they ever display a desire to change their lives, or come into a relationship with Jesus.
The problem was not in God’s willingness save them, but in their inability and unwillingness to turn from their sins—to Jesus for salvation. Although many people are miserable in their present condition, the sin within them—chains their will to their sins, and it will not let them go.
Many academics who retain distinguished titles and positions of notoriety in their particular fields; find it impossible to acknowledge the existence of God. To do so would cost them everything that they have—long labored for, and by great difficulty—to achieve.
For seventy or eighty years of this world, many people will sacrifice eternal life; an existence that is beyond comprehension; for a few years of earthly pleasure. Jesus described this inexplicable conundrum:
Matthew 16:26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
For a life that is temporary and quickly passing away, many will forfeit eternal life.
The truth is: men love darkness (their sin) more than they love God.
Salvation is of the Lord. He has done everything that is necessary to save us. Forgiveness and redemption is available to anyone—at any time. The sacrifice has been made for our sins; all that we have to do is receive it. First, we must come in repentance before God and ask His forgiveness; and be willing to surrender our life to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. If anyone is sincerely willing to do this; they can have eternal life, immediately.
On the day that a person finds that his earthly life is over and he stands before God to offer his excuses, he will discover that there will be nothing left to say. As he beholds the Holiness of God, at that moment; he will realize that the former decision to reject Jesus, was an eternal error. After death, there is no second chance. God has given us one opportunity to have our sins dealt with, by the cross that Jesus died upon. If we choose to reject this great work that has been accomplished, before we die—even though salvation came by the arm of the Lord—after death; it cannot reach us. If we do not reach up to God today in repentance and express a desire to be saved now, while we are still alive; we will have no second chance after we pass into eternity.
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment…
God is not threatening us with Hell; He is offering us Heaven; if we are willing to come to Him. If God wanted to send us all to Hell, we would already be there, now. The fact that He allowed His Son to die for the terrible things that we have done is an eternal testament to the fact that He was willing to do anything to keep us out of Hell. Sadly, we have so many excuses for why we are unwilling to come to God; we are the one’s who prevent our entrance into heaven.
Things that hinder a relationship with God:
When the rich young ruler came to Jesus, he wanted to know what he must do to have eternal life. Jesus told him to go and sell all that he owned, then come and follow Him. His excuse; he owned so much that it was impossible for him to give these things up to follow Jesus. In reality, the problem was not the riches that the young man possessed; it was the riches which possessed the young man. If this young ruler had been willing to give up everything to follow Jesus, it is likely that the Lord would have told him that he did not have to sell all he possessed. In his willingness to rid himself of anything that would hinder his relationship with God, he would show that the Lord was first in his life and the things he possessed were secondary to God.
Isaac has become everything that Abraham dreamed of. He is the apple of his father’s eye and the delight of his life. Abraham loves Isaac so much that he has become a danger to his father. In order for anyone to truly Love God, He must be first and foremost in everything. There is no room on the throne of our heart for anyone except God. To place a son, a daughter, mother, or father, or any other person above the Lord is to commit the gravest error.
Matthew 10:37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
It is only right that the Lord demand that He is the first love of our life. By His very nature as the Creator and Sustainer of all life, God has the right to be worshipped exclusively by all of His creation.
To give him an opportunity for growth, the Lord desires that Abraham understand—by practical experience, who is truly first in his life. This test is not for the Lord so that He can find out where Abraham’s heart is. The test is for Abraham. The Lord understands Abraham so well, that He is keenly aware of his love for Isaac. The problem is that Abraham does not know that his love for his son has surpassed his love for God.
As Abraham brought his only son, Isaac, to God and was willing to thrust the knife into what he loved most, God stopped him and said: “Now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from Me.”
At another time, one of the scribes came to Jesus and made a public profession that he wanted to follow Him. The excuse he offered, for why he could not follow Jesus; was a matter of inconvenience.
“First, let me go and bury my father…”
This was a well known and frequently quoted excuse by certain people of this time in history. In fact, the father was not dead; it was not likely that he was even sick. The person who would quote this excuse, was really saying, “I am not ready now… It is not convenient for me… Perhaps someday when I feel the need…”
Jesus response was, “Follow me. Let the other spiritually dead people bury your father.”
Matthew 8:19-22 Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” 21 Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Excuses are as old as Adam, for he made the first excuse to the Lord for why he sinned and disobeyed the Lord.
Genesis 3:12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”
If we persist, our excuses will prevent us from obtaining eternal life and all the blessings that God has in mind for us. We have a very limited amount of time here on earth to decide for Jesus and secure our eternal destiny. The longer we put off the decision, the harder it will be to make this decision later. If we should die before we make a commitment to Jesus as our Savior, we will be lost.
And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, Hebrews 9:27
The issue of eternal life and the forgiveness of our sins is the most important decision that we will ever make. It is better to settle this question now rather than later. We may find that later will be too late. Every day, hundreds of thousands of people find themselves suddenly gone from this earth and have no second chance at redemption. Today is the day of Salvation. I pray that you have made this important decision and rest fully on the promises of Jesus, as you wait for His return.
Soon, the time that we have to receive Jesus will be past, and there will be no opportunity for us to be saved. As the Lord pronounced—through the prophet Jeremiah; the people of Judah were full of their excuses for why they would not serve their God. In the end, their opportunity for salvation had passed, and they were not saved.
Jeremiah 8:20 “The harvest is past, The summer is ended, And we are not saved!”
The Lord has accomplished our salvation, as Isaiah declares in this prophecy of Isaiah 59:16, His arm of righteousness. There is nothing that we must do to obtain this salvation except to admit our sins and receive Jesus as our Savior. The difficulty for most people, is to come to the place in their life where they are ready to admit that they are a sinner. God has done everything that is necessary for us to have eternal life. All of our sins are already forgiven for Jesus’ sake. All that separates us from eternal life and the forgiveness of all our sins—is to come to Jesus, confess, and believe.
Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
The entire purpose of Jesus’ presence here on earth, was for our salvation. Jesus was born to die. He came to offer up His life for ours and make one perfect way in which we could all be saved. The prophet Joel, expresses this fact with great certainly, in his prophecy of chapter 2:32
Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.
New Testament Fulfillment:
Romans 10:9-13 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
It is clear from the text above, from Romans Chapter 10:9-13, that Paul believed that this prophecy from Joel, was fulfilled by Jesus Christ as the Messiah. Romans 10:13 recites a direct quote from Joel Chapter 2:32: “Whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
It is not a great mystery nor is it too difficult; to find the forgiveness of our sins and obtain eternal life. God desires that all people are saved. He has made this possible with only one requirement: “Will you believe what He has said concerning His Son Jesus Christ? “
Jesus did not come as “a way” to heaven. He came as “the only way to heaven.” God made salvation very simple and easy to understand. Romans Chapter 10:9-13 explains it quite well.
1. Confess that Jesus Christ died for your sins and was raised from the dead for your justification.
2. Believe this truth in your heart, not just your mind.
3. Call on the name of Jesus, and be saved.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus…
Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
God has given us the privilege and the choice to either believe what He said concerning Jesus, or to not believe. If we regard His word as truth and respond accordingly; He will forgive all of our sins—based on what Jesus has done on the Cross, and grant us eternal life with Him, in heaven.
The choice is ours. If we don’t like the choices; if we refuse to believe; if we think God—unfair in giving us only one choice, then we can say no and be lost forever. If we reject what God has required for our salvation, then we have rejected the only way that we can be saved. Those who will not believe, have only themselves to blame in the end. God has done everything that could be done to save us—the choice is ours.
Why did the Lord instruct Abraham to wait eight days? Babies are born without the ability to coagulate their blood and stop bleeding. This ability comes from the presence of vitamin “K” in the blood stream. It is not until the seventh day that vitamin K is produced in the blood of an infant.1 Should Abraham—tried to circumcise his son too soon, the resulting profuse bleeding could have killed his son.
