“Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you” (Jeremiah 32:17)

It is a fact of science and the Bible, that no one knows exactly how old the universe is. Science estimates that our universe began about 13.799 billion years ago. Secular scientists call the beginning of the universe, the “Big Bang.” Christians who hold that the Bible is the Word of God, believe that when Genesis 1:1 states, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,” this is the moment when the universe came into being.

These two definitions for the beginning of the universe are not in conflict with each other—as long as we understand what the beginning means to Christians and non-Christians.

There is good evidence that the universe is very old, and the six days of creation described in Genesis 1:3-31, are the narrative of how God made the earth ready for man to inhabit. In the next section of this book, we will explore this idea in greater detail.

This book is not written to try and reconcile science and the Bible, but merely as an assembly of the biblical texts and the scientific information that exists today for the creation of the universe.

I believe that we can prove that what scientists state today for the age and beginning of the universe, is what the Bible has been saying for over 3,000 years.

If you consider all the evidence placed before you in this book, I think that a majority of people will agree on many principles and facts of the universe that have not been understood in the past.

The Bible states at its opening that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. This is a statement about the origin and beginning of the universe. God does not tell us precisely how this happened, but we do gain evidence for the processes that took place, from scientific discoveries found in our universe. I believe that this evidence does not conflict with the biblical narrative of creation. As you continue through this book, you will understand why I say this at the beginning.

When God created the universe, what were the specific events that took place? The Old Testament uses a modern scientific term in describing the creation event, by stating that the universe was, “stretched out.”

(c. 1000 BC). Psalms 104:1-2: “O Lord my God, You are very great: You are clothed with honor and majesty, Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain.”

Unknown to many is the fact that describing the universe in its creation as, “stretched out,” is the precise scientific term used by scientists today.

“Stretched out” is no arbitrary term, because it accurately describes the precise procedure for how the universe began and proceeded. During the initial explosion of pure energy, when matter was distributed in one direction, while space was created simultaneously to accommodate the expanding matter—this process moved as though a curtain had been opened. This expansion did not spread out in a circular pattern as with most explosions, but moved out sideways, as one would expand a curtain to open from one point to another.

It should be noted that the Bible states a scientific fact for how the universe began—stretching out as a curtain is opened—almost three thousand years before scientists knew this fact.

This is precisely how the Bible described the expansion of the universe, in Psalms 104:1-2: “God Stretched out the heavens like a curtain.”

The prophet Jeremiah wrote 2,700 years ago and described the expansion of the initial universe as taking place, “at His discretion.” In other words, the Creator knew beforehand that the initial expansion of pure energy had to be conducted by a specific procedure or it would not produce results that would later allow for life on earth. God used His wisdom and discretion to determine how this process must proceed.

Jeremiah 10:12: “He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom, And has stretched out the heavens at His discretion.”

The Hebrew word used to describe the stretching out of the universe when it began, is נָטָה nâṭâ, literally to expand from one point to another like one opens a curtain in the morning.

This Hebrew word is incredible because, during the time that Jeremiah lived on earth in 655 B.C. (2,699 years ago), no one knew that the universe proceeded from its beginning in this manner. Only in the last 80 years has man acquired knowledge that the universe proceeded in one direction, as a curtain is opened, at the beginning.

This same description for the universe is repeated twice by the prophet Isaiah, also written 2,700 years ago: Isaiah 42:5 states: “Thus says God the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out…” and again in Isaiah 40:22: “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them out.”

Science Confirms The Biblical Creation Event

Some people say that asserting an old earth/universe is merely an attempt at reconciling science with the Bible. This is not true. We confirm the creation of the universe by God through the texts of the Bible, not science. In Genesis chapters 1-2, God tells Moses by direct revelation exactly what took place when He created the universe and made earth ready for man nearly 3,474 years ago.

The creation event first came to man from God, as described in the Bible. It was much later that science confirmed what the Bible has always stated.

Science describes the moment of creation

Imagine a tiny particle containing all of the matter of the universe, so infinitesimally small that it is invisible to your eye. This is what Astrophysicists believe the universe originated from.

Scientists today generally agree that the universe began as a “singularity” about 13.799 billion years ago.[1] Once the scientific community agreed that the universe had a beginning, they began asking the question, “How did it come into existence, and what existed before the universe?”

What is truly astounding is that when we read the observations of noted cosmologists, we are struck by the fact that they cannot tell us how the universe came into existence from nothing.

Scientists admit that for the universe to begin from nothing, this would violate all the laws of Physics. The beginning of the universe is such a mystery that many scientists have concluded that the laws of Physics as we understand them today, did not exist at the beginning of the universe.[2]

Astrophysicists begin their description of the origin of the universe at “one-hundredth of a second, the earliest time about which we can speak with any confidence.”[3] An infinitesimally small particle of matter about the size of one atom contains the physical material that comprises all of the galaxies, stars, and planets. Imagine the immense size of the present universe with an estimated number of stars in the observable universe of 300 Sextillion Stars.[4]

At one-hundredth of a second, this material explodes into a light that fills the universe. The heat from this explosion was greater than the temperature at the center of the hottest star in the universe, some hundred thousand million degrees Centigrade or 1011.[5]

Recent discoveries through the use of powerful observational instruments at Keck Observatory in Hawaii have revealed that small dim stars known as red dwarfs are in far greater numbers than previously believed. This added ability to see so many more stars than previously possible, has boosted the estimated number of stars in the known universe by three hundred percent to about 300 Sextillion stars.⁠[6]

Imagine if you will, God who has no first cause and has existed forever. In His eternal and unlimited mind, He conceived the idea for a universe in which He could display to all creation—His great power and glory—much as a great artist paints a magnificent canvas to display his creative powers.

God formulated a plan to fashion a race of beings that were like Him. He would give His new creation the power of self-determination, creativity, reason, and conscience. Man exists today as a stellar reminder that an intelligence of unlimited power, must be the source of all that exists.

I will present in this book, the conclusions of noted scientists who have examined the massive evidence that exists today from the universe, the earth, and man himself—which confirms that everything that exists, was engineered by an infinite mind. Many of these noted scientists have won the Nobel Prize for advancements in their specific areas of proficiency.[8]

A fine-tuned universe designed for life

The argument for a finely tuned universe is the most compelling evidence to prove the existence of God because it demonstrates by science and mathematics, that intelligence is required for the universe to exist.

Many people have difficulty with the idea of the biblical God because they see Him as a very old man with a long white beard, sitting angrily on a throne, ready to send people to hell.

The God who created the universe does not resemble this conflation in the slightest.

Think of a Being who has existed forever, a Transcendent Being who is so advanced in wisdom, knowledge, and engineering ability, that He can create an entire universe, and human life on at least one planet.

It is a common idea amongst many cosmologists, that there is likely an advanced civilization, or many civilizations in the universe, that has the intelligence and ability to terraform a planet or even create another universe. If there are beings in an advanced civilization somewhere in the universe with these abilities, it is no stretch of the imagination to imagine the origin of all beings, by a Being who has the power to create anything and everything.

This is the Being the Bible calls God, who is revealed in the pages of the Bible.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”[9]

A universe fine-tuned for life is evidence of this Being

Leading atheist and author of “The God Delusion,” Professor Richard Dawkins, admits that a fine-tuned universe is good evidence for believing the universe was created:

“There may be good reasons for believing in a god, and if there are any I would expect them to come from possibly modern physics, from cosmology, from the observation that (as some people claim), that laws and constants of the universe are too finely tuned to be an accident. That would not be a wholly disreputable reason for believing in some form of supernatural deity.”[10] —Richard Dawkins

The reality that the universe exhibits design characteristics that are only possible by intelligence—demands a rational answer. We cannot satisfy science or questions regarding the existence of life, except by a Being who has these capabilities. You will discover by scientific evidence, that our universe could not exist by any natural process. The events that took place in Planck Time happened at the precise moment, and in the specific procedure that was required for our universe to begin and continue. If these precise events had not occurred when they were required, in the specific balance that was needed, our universe would have collapsed back upon itself and ceased to exist—at its inception.

No natural or evolutionary process is capable of foreknowledge that is required to produce the specific events that we know took place—at the precise moment they were needed—when our universe began. I will detail these facts of science for you in this book.

The primary conclusion of the fine-tuned universe is that no natural process is capable of fine-tuning anything. Every natural process requires billions of years in which billions of attempts and failures ensue before a single success.

A universe that is fine-tuned to make human life possible on earth, requires that all of these physical constants be successful the first time. Any deviation in the precise setting of these hundreds of fine-tuned constants, and our earth ceases to exist. This requirement of a one-off success in achieving the precise setting of so many parameters for life to exist eliminates a naturally occurring universe from consideration.

The facts of science and cosmology demand that the universe has a beginning and that it is not eternal. Since all things that exist owe their existence to a source, certainly, the source of our universe could not have originated by self-propagation or spontaneous action—apart from an infusion of matter, which did not exist in the first place.

The evidence for an intelligent engineer is observed by the presence of laws in both physics and mathematics that also demand an intelligent source. Laws and math come from a mind; they do not spontaneously generate themselves.

Since the physics of the universe are such that these laws exist within narrowly defined rules, it is unquestionable that the source of their existence is transcendent their existence.

Before the moment of creation—which science defines as the Big Bang, all of the data suggests that nothing existed. How is it possible that an infinite past produced no time, space, or matter, and then suddenly—everything in the universe came into existence?

Let us imagine eternity past when nothing existed. How did a tiny particle of densely compacted material, appear in the first place? Why would this fragment of matter appear at all after an eternal period of nothing, out of nowhere, and at that precise moment—in space?

It is interesting that this had never happened at any time previously. What could have caused this event to take place, when there was nothing in existence before that moment?

Science and Cosmology have acquired a great deal of knowledge regarding the beginning of the universe—yet they have not learned why it began in the first place.

The postulation of a multiverse, or infinite number of other universes, as the source for our universe, is not scientifically provable. Existing only as a theoretical, mathematical equation, the multiverse is not science, it is mysticism. We cannot see beyond our present universe, and therefore, the posit of any other universe as responsible for our universe is preposterous.

It is certain that when all of the facts for the origin of our universe are known, and scientists open the door that reveals the origin of the universe, standing at the portico of creation will be a Being not unlike us, who has been waiting there all along. Smiling from ear to ear, asking: “What took you so long.”

God knew that eventually, we would find that He is the intelligence behind the engineering of this masterful universe. If we simply follow the evidence to its conclusion, we will find that only a Transcendent Being who is Eternal and Unlimited could create the universe we inhabit.
