Modern Atheism Is A Religion

Could modern atheism be classified as a new religion? If so, what fundamental tenets of atheism define it as a religion?

The issue of defining Atheism as a modern religion has both philosophical and legal dimensions.

While atheism traditionally presents itself as a lack of belief—specifically, the absence of belief in God or gods—there is a growing argument that modern atheism, particularly in its activist forms, shares several characteristics with what could be considered a religion. The following is a comprehensive and documented exploration of this issue.

Definitions of Religion: How Do We Classify a Religion?

The classification of a belief system as a religion is based on definitions, both philosophical and legal. Here’s how religion is commonly defined:

Webster’s Dictionary Definition of a Religion:

“A cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith.”

The Oxford Dictionary:

“A particular system of faith and worship; a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance.”

A Decision By The U.S. Supreme Court

In Torcaso v. Watkins, 1961, The Court recognized “secular humanism” as a religion, stating that religions are “systems of belief and devotion,” even if they are non-theistic.

Anthropological Definitions:

  • Clifford Geertz: “A system of symbols which acts to establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations… by formulating conceptions of a general order of existence.”
  • Ninian Smart: Defined religion by dimensions, including doctrinal, mythological, ethical, ritual, experiential, social, and material.

By the above definitions, belief in a deity is not a required component of religion.

Fundamental Tenets of Modern Atheism

Modern atheism, particularly the New Atheism movement (championed by Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitchens), extends beyond personal disbelief into a structured worldview with its own doctrines and mission.

Core Beliefs and Doctrines:  Metaphysical Naturalism: The belief that the material universe is all that exists—there is no supernatural realm. Scientism: Science is considered the only reliable path to knowledge and truth. A Rejection of Theism: A fundamental disbelief in God or gods and rejection of supernatural explanations. Secular Humanism: Often associated with atheism, this asserts that humans are capable of morality and self-fulfillment without belief in God.

Ethical Framework

Moral Relativism or Consequentialism: Ethics are often based on human reason, societal consensus, or outcomes rather than absolute moral laws.

Human Rights as Inherent: Atheists often argue for universal human rights grounded in human dignity, though the grounding of these rights is often debated philosophically.

Rituals and Practices

While lacking formal ritual worship, there are: Gatherings (e.g., atheist conventions, Sunday Assemblies). Ritualized debates and public critiques of religion. Commemorations of atheist thinkers and scientists (e.g., Darwin Day).

Evangelism and Apologetics

Atheists active evangelization, often aiming to convert believers to atheism. Atheist apologetics: Books, debates, podcasts, and media content designed to defend atheism and critique religious beliefs.

Sacred Texts and Authorities

Influential texts: The God Delusion (Dawkins), God Is Not Great (Hitchens), The End of Faith (Harris). Authorities: Revered figures whose works are often cited as definitive (akin to theologians or prophets in religion).

Why Modern Atheism is considered a Religion

Atheists have a comprehensive worldview: Modern atheism answers ultimate questions: Origins: How did we get here? (Evolution, cosmology). Meaning: What is our purpose? (Self-defined, personal fulfillment). Morality: How should we live? (Secular ethics, humanism). Destiny: What happens after death? (Non-existence).

These parallels are strikingly similar to religious worldviews, except they operate without reference to a deity.

Faith in Unprovable Assumptions of Atheism

Atheism often relies on metaphysical assumptions that cannot be empirically proven, such as: Materialism: The belief that only the physical exists. Uniformity of nature: Necessary for scientific inquiry but philosophically assumed. Objective morality without a divine lawgiver.

Atheism Has A Shared Identity and Community: Atheists often form communities, creating a sense of belonging and solidarity, fulfilling a sociological function of religion. Some modern atheists participate in rituals that resemble religious ones, e.g., atheist “churches” and gatherings.

Atheists, Evangelism, and Intolerance

Certain forms of militant atheism exhibit dogmatism, intolerance of dissent, and proselytizing zeal, traditionally associated with religion. Campaigns against religious displays (e.g., nativity scenes, crosses) resemble a missionary effort to establish a secular orthodoxy.

Legal Precedents Defining Atheism as a Religion

Several U.S. court decisions recognize atheism as functionally equivalent to a religion for legal purposes.

Torcaso v. Watkins (1961): The Supreme Court held that government cannot prefer theistic religions over nontheistic religions, recognizing secular humanism as a religious equivalent.

United States v. Seeger (1965): The Court broadened the definition of “religious belief” to include sincerely held moral and ethical beliefs, not confined to belief in a deity.

Kaufman v. McCaughtry (2005): A federal court ruled that atheism is a religion protected by the First Amendment, guaranteeing the right of an inmate to form an atheist study group.

The Religion of “No Religion”

Atheism as a Belief in Non-Belief:  Atheism often replaces traditional religion with ideological adherence to: Science as savior. Reason as the ultimate authority. Humanity as its own moral compass. This creates a functional religion, in that it structures life, provides meaning, fosters community, and offers ultimate answers, even without supernatural belief.

The Conclusion: Atheism Can Be Classified as a Religion

While classical atheism (the simple absence of belief) may not qualify, modern atheism, especially as practiced by New Atheists and secular humanists, fits many criteria used to define a religion: Beliefs about ultimate reality; Ethical and moral systems; Communities of belief and practice; Evangelism and apologetics; Legal recognition in some jurisdictions.

In effect, atheism has evolved into a religion of non-religion, offering faith in science, hope in human progress, and community among the like-minded.

  1. Came across this Youtube short video about Who Created God and thought I would share.

Pastor Rob has written about this in at least two of his books if not more. Worth a view. Check it out.

  2. I always find it interesting the answers I obtained from Atheists when I ask them What existed a trillion years before the Big Bang?  I usually ask this question when an Atheist claims that they have the facts about reality like the rest of the world, many who may believe in the One True God, do not.

So let me share why I ask this question.  I ask it in a point blank way to expose their fraudulent nature in that they believe they are the wisest amongst us.  How do you explain ruling out the possibility of a God, without even a second thought, if you are so wise?  Why rule anything out if your objective is to seek the truth about a thing?  Doesn’t science demand all possibilities be considered? Then why rule out God? Why?

This is why they are Atheists, because they wish to explain OUR reality on their terms which are usually full of easily exposable deficiencies, highly theoretical or unprovable. Lets consider what is written in 1 Corinthians 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.”

Now.  When I ask What existed one trillion years before the Big Bang? I am asking a question to see if the Atheist is considering a reality outside our known limits of roughly 15 billion years of time which we, most Christians included, believe OUR REALITY possesses.  So, most Atheists, not perceiving the intent of the question, will usually say something to the effect that we do not know for sure, or we may never know.  However, the answer usually given is a cop out because they have not realized the irrational nature of the question to start with when compared against their facts concerning OUR reality, and thus, their answer presents itself more like a talking point that a fact of science.

Asking this question would be like asking what did one plus one equal before it equaled two; or how can I become an American citizen one second after the Big Bang.  These are ridiculous questions.  But we get these answers because most Atheists are not that well trained in critical thinking, and because of that they are the ones when trapped in their ignorance will show their ignorance by just bashing Christians, or, exclaiming you still haven’t proven God.  And we Christians see right through it because our God points it out to us.  Imagine that.

But that is OK.  We can handle it because Our Lord and Savior has conquered the world. But let’s not lose sight that some Atheists are highly educated and doing some incredible work and their thoughts are worth considering especially when it brings glory to our God.  So as we have progressed in our understanding of how the universe came into existence, particular with the understanding of how tightly refined the cosmological constants are, many of these scientists are beginning to consider intelligent design as a real possibility.

What would you, the Atheist, say if I told you approximately 2,800 years ago a prophet named Isaiah told us about the Big Bang when he said in Isaiah 40:22He stretches out the heavens like a curtain.”  Isn’t that exactly how scientist perceive the occurrence of the Big Bang today?  Imagine that. A prophet, a man of God, a man of faith indicating 2,800 years ago the concept of the Big Bang.  Can you believe it … what say you Atheist?  How can you now deny exactly that to which many of our brightest, Atheists included, have come too?  There are so many other scriptures written thousands of years ago stating this in obvious and simple terms as well; especially, when no one alive then could have remotely perceived the universe in today’s terms. Where did those insights come from? I definitely want and Atheist to answer that one. Because they was a written FACT and one that existed within our reality!

Why point this out?  I point it out because God wishes us, Atheists included, to get to know Him and the only way we can know Him at this time, because of sinful nature, is to understand Him by that which He has created.  Consider Proverbs 25:2 “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, to search out a matter is the glory of kings”.  So exactly who are these kings?  I liken them to our greatest scientists (Atheists or Non-Atheists alike) and national rulers that support them.  Why would I afford this honor to an Atheist?  I do so because each of their discoveries has led to an understanding that intelligent design is a real possibility in the reality of their facts.

God is patient with us.  He is also forgiving of our current nature to a point that He gave His only son as a sacrifice to pay for sins so that we did not have to experience punishment ourselves for these sins.  I revere You Lord for that … I worship You for your grace in making that possible.

I pray for all our scientists to come to that understanding and to continue the great work they are doing.

Now.  Let me posit an answer for the question What existed a trillion years before the Big Bang?  Answer: Eternity.

I do not believe and will never believe that the Universe came into existence all on its own.  There are just too many cosmological constants that had to be balanced in such a way for life to exist anywhere in the universe.  No unthinking natural process could have achieved this balance. The odds of this are so astronomically small that all scientists rule that number as in impossibility.

I also do not believe in a multiverse either because it would suffer infinitely worse from the same weakness our current universe suffers from as it relates to their origins.  I say worse because if there are infinite universes then the Who created that? question would have to be answered infinite times making a reasonable answer impossible in my view.

I, also, do not believe the Universe was created 6,000 years ago either.  Simply put, there is too much data to suggest that notion is true as well.  But I do believe God acted on this planet 6,000 years ago for life to sustain man just before He created us here.  But that does not mean that I believe the Earth is 6,000 years old either, again just too much data suggesting otherwise.

I believe Eternity existed prior to our reality and that Eternity, a realm and reality unto itself, has no beginning or end (consider the bi-directional infinite nature of a number line for a precedent) and is ruled by a Being called GOD who is infinite in all characteristics.  And it is this God that made the invisible VISIBLE by creating ALL THINGS including the Atheists. And when I say Eternity I am talking about a Realm of Life that exists outside of what we call Space Time.

So, you are entitled, just as I am, to believe whatever you choose.  As for me, I will follow the LORD our Eternal Benefactor.

Let your Kingdom Come My Lord.  Amen.

    The Beginning is near.

So I want to recommend and endorse two books that Pastor Rob has written that has increased my knowledge of these matters greatly … many of them expressed above. They are written in a balanced way explaining many of the cosmological theories. Take a peek at them for yourselves.

May God continue to bless you Pastor Rob.

Thank you Pastor Rob for sharing our Lord’s insights in these two wonderful works.

  3. no matter how many christians try to lie and claim atheism is a religion, it is not. Atheism is a conclusion that a particular god or gods doesn’t exist. That christians need to lie and try to claim everyone “really” agrees with them is rather pathetic. this is just hilarious: “Beliefs about ultimate reality; Ethical and moral systems; Communities of belief and practice; Evangelism and apologetics; Legal recognition in some jurisdictions.”atheists have facts about reality. atheists have many different moral and ethical systems. There is no “practice” with atheism, so Robert fails miserably there. No apologetics since there is nothing to excuse, and legal recognition doesn’t make a religion. It’s great when christians are so desperate.

    • atheists have facts about reality … Your words. So, One Trillion years before the Big Bang what does YOUR FACTS say existed?

      • Atheists have facts about reality, and we don’t have all of them. We don’t know what existed “one trillion years before the big bang”. We may never know completely on what caused the big bang or what existed, if anything, before it.

Still no evidence for your god or any gods. And unsuprisingly, Christians cannot agree on their god when it coems to what it wants and not a single one of you can do what your messiah promises to his true believes. Christians are some of the best evdience their religion is nonsense.

      • @clubschadenfreude … Pastor Rob has book that will help you understand how I believe the universe came into existence since you have clearly admitted to some uncertainty of the matter. You will find it FACT FILLED. Here’s a link the kindle version:

The book is free at the moment. A gift from a friend.

More an more scientists are starting to admit that the universe must have been created by intelligent design… how else could you explain gravity and electromagnetism being perfectly balance at -430 Planck time? How do YOU explain that? It is impossible for me to believe that a natural process could have perfectly balanced those two without first conceiving what gravity or electromagnetism was the first place. How do you explain that? The book above addresses this question and many, many others.

I am not some ignorant Christian. For I am a scientist that believes in the One True God … The God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. How do you account for such a person as me? How can faith and science coexist? It does. It absolutely does. And for you suggest otherwise is a misrepresentation coming from you FOR I AM PROOF of this truth.

It is unimportant to me, at this time, to explain to you the faith components of my beliefs. My objective here is show you the basis for my beliefs.

Only God, regardless of what that means to, created the universe and everything else in it. This is the conclusion I have come to. I am not asking you to believe that … I challenging you to give a better answer than we don’t know or may never know. I am doing that because I put faith in God’s creation MAN to come to those answers because man is capable of it because God made him capable of it.

I would suggest you stop for a moment and ask yourself this one question: Are you perfect? If the answer is no, then how can you expect anyone else to be at this time? Seriously. I am seriously not trying to draw an opinion of you base on two comments but I feel as though you have an angst against Christians. I want you to know … I get it.

I know what it is like to be told to believe in God by someone who could tell me one important thing about Him. So I was not going to be that person … no that was not going to be me. So, it took me a long time to come to those beliefs as it took me a long to come to an answer for the one question I could not handle. The very question I asked you. What existed a trillion years before the Big Bang?

For me the only rational answer I could derive was … GOD. Because I came to that answer I was now able to then find reasonable and logically answers for many other questions outside of faith like Who created God? And you and I can talk about that question if want. I have had people ask me that question and I think I have a reasonable answer for it.

However, I am not asking you to believe in God … seriously I not asking you to. I am asking to question everything. I mean it … question everything … even me a Follower of Jesus Christ.

No Christian is perfect. I know I am not. But I am respectful of others because of my God. I am not a hateful Christian and yes there are some … Christianity has done some vile things in its past. And we can talk about that too if you want.

But I want you to understand this about me … I am not trying to convert you. Just one human having a conversation with another … on the Science of God.

Please have a wonderful day. I hope to get to know you.

Let me know if you want my take on who created God.

      • we created god as an explanation for things we didn’t understand. Humans as humans have not been around all that long, as these things go, but we do like to ‘understand” why and who and how many. And there is, according to literature, more than one way to believe in a god or gods. Some religions have multiple gods, some have one for every month of the year. Some have goddesses. Saying that yours is the one true religion kinda spits on those people who worship their own god (or gods, or goddesses or whatever) and presumes that they are wrong and you are not, which is basically arrogant. God would not approve.

      • we created god as an explanation for things we didn’t understand.

Incorrect. God created us with a knowledge that He exists. He made us with a desire to know Him and have a relationship with Him. He did this (according to Romans chapter 1), so that we would be “without excuse.”

Although there are millions of gods that humans have created, there is only One True and Living God.

The Bible exists as a historical, eyewitness testimony of the One God.

Humans as humans have not been around all that long, as these things go, but we do like to ‘understand” why and who and how many.

The Bible details the truth concerning the creation of human beings. We were made in the image God, in that He made us like Himself. In the beginning we were perfect in every way. But along with our creation God gave us the most important gift that He also possess: free will.

God is a self-determinate Being, and He gave us the privilege of determining our life. God created the first man with a choice to trust Him or chose evil. The first man chose evil over God, and the results were what we see today in the world: evil, suffering, sickness and death.

God sent His Son to live a perfect life and present this perfect life as payment for our sins. When anyone choses to trust in what Jesus did for us on the cross, God wipes our record of sin, clean, and we become perfect again before God, fully ready to live in the perfect world that God has created for all those who chose Christ.

You have the same choice today: a new life, living in a perfect world. Or a life that is filled with evil, sickness, suffering and death.

I was an atheist in 1975. It was by seeking to either prove or disprove the Bible I discovered that everything in the Bible is true and there is no evidence anywhere that anything in the Bible is not true.

God would not approve

What you are describing is the creation of man-made religions. God did not create any of these religions that we find in the world. God made us to have a relationship with Him. He walked with the first man in friendship and love. They knew each other, and their fellowship together was perfect. It was by man’s choice to reject God and chose evil that the world became filled with evil.

The religions of man are the result of this loss of fellowship with God, creating an insatiable desire for all of us to be reunited with God. Only by coming into a new relationship with God through Jesus Christ, is this possible. In John chapter 3 Jesus explained to Nicodemus, the most esteemed religious teacher in Israel, that God is not interested in our religious acts, but in repentance and sorrow over our sins, and that we might receive Jesus who God sent, to reunite us with God.

      • @Judy Thompson. Not finding a way to reply to your ridiculous comment directly, I will post my response here. Do you wish me to believe that we came from NOTHING? Is this your argument? For we did not come from nothing, we came from the One True God, the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. I am not the one who is making this claim, though it is what I believe, for it is that God, THE ONLY TRUE GOD, who is making that claim. And it is that God who is spitting on your false gods for they are man made and not REAL. If saying this makes me arrogant in your eyes, in that, I will not bend my knee to your false gods, then I am happy to be arrogant in your eyes. Now, what does your denial of my beliefs make you … AN ARROGANT HYPOCRITE and a Satan Worshiper.

Just remember this. Jesus died for you as well. I shall pray for your soul as I am commanded unless of course you find this arrogant as well. For you are truly lost at this time.

So in the words of Joshua. You can go and believe what ever it is you wish to believe. But for me and mine I will believe in the Lord my God, the Only True God, the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. Now if that bothers you TO BAD.
