God: As Creator Of All Life

Why Earth Is Perfect For Life

Although scientists struggle to provide a naturalistic reason for the universe, the best answer so far is still the first sentence of the Bible:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  —Genesis 1:1

The reason that the Genesis description is our best answer is due to the fact that we can actually validate that this is the manner in which the universe began. There was no time, space, or matter before the singularity of the universe commenced. Out of nothing, from nothing, for no apparent reason except that God determined this exact moment. It is interesting that the word for “create” in Genesis 1:1, is from the Hebrew word bara, which means to create from nothing. This is precisely what scientists state as the origin of the universe.

In the beginning there was nothing and then suddenly, everything that would become the universe began to rapidly expand.

Alternative Explanations For The Universe

Because a universe that appeared out of nothing at a the beginning of time is so compelling for the support of God’s existence, theoretical physicists have created a few alternative explanations for a universe through natural processes.

Although new theories such as the multiverse, bulk universe and no boundary universe give us theoretical explanations for its origin, we have no way of testing these ideas except in the theoretical because we cannot see beyond our present universe.

All of the physical scientific evidence that exists today proves that our universe was fine-tuned for life from -430th of a second so that we humans could live upon the earth. Throughout the entire history of the universe, precise control over specific events were necessary. The universe did not begin accidentally and then expand to its present state by a chaotic process, but one that was precisely controlled. As the universe developed, certain physical attributes were fine-tuned so that intelligent life could live on earth.

  • If these anthropic constants are not all in existence at the same time, no life on earth would exist today.
  • If any of these anthropic constants are altered even slightly, no life would be possible.

As explained by a Physicist/Mathematician, the universe bears a signature by its fine-tuned constants that require intelligence and eliminate chance or a natural process:

When written down, most physical laws involve at least one physical constant.  For example, the “G” in gravitational force: F=\frac{Gm_1m_2}{r^2}, or the “h” in the energy of photons: E=hf, or the speed of light: “c”.

There are a couple dozen other (more and more obscure) constants out there.  Changing these constants changes how the universe hangs together, which forces are most important, what chemical elements are possible, how (and if) things interact, whether or not stars exist and for how long, etc.

None of the constants have any reason to be what they are, and not something else.  Sure, G=6.673 × 10-11m3kg-1s-2, but why?  Why not G=2 m3kg-1s-2 or something?

What’s really spooky is that even tiny changes in most of the physical constants tend to make life, and even the universe as we know it, impossible.“[1]

There are at minimum, 122 of these fine-tuned anthropic constants that are built into everything around us. All of creation has these same qualities of balance that are governed by very strict laws which allow them to exist.

The probability that our universe could come into existence and be able to sustain life is just 1:1010123 – extremely tiny in contrast to a spontaneous ex nihilo origination of a chance observer: Perhaps 1:10101021 for the smallest possible conscious computer and between 1:10101051 and 1:10101070 for a “Boltzmann brain.” (The probability for a solar system like ours coming out of the vacuum is 1:10101085.)[2]

These numbers are so large that they defy the probability that the universe could exist by accident. It is widely accepted that any number above 1050 is impossible as chance.[3] These numbers for the odds of a universe that began under extreme entropy at its beginning and the anthropic constants that exist to fine-tune the universe to make life a reality, are impossible. The math leads us to conclude that only an intelligence, purposeful Creator could be capable of the magnificence of this universe.

Stunning Example Of Fine-Tuning

One important example of a fine-tuned universe that is a critical requirement for life is observed in the ratio between the electron and a proton of every atom in the universe.

The ratio of mass between an electron and a proton is 1:1836, meaning that a proton is 1,836 times larger than an electron. Although there is a great difference between the size of these two parts of an atom, both the electron and proton maintain the same electrical charge.

If the electrical charge of the electron is altered by just one part in 100 billion, the body of every human being on earth would explode.[4]

This fine balance that permits life is observed all across the earth and the universe itself. The fact that these fine-tuned constants exist and are necessary for life, proves that we live in an environment that was purposely created for us, not by any natural process or happenstance.

No natural process has the capacity to fine tune an environment for life, before life begins. The entire premise of evolution is that small changes took place over a great expanse of time. Unless these constants were in place first, life never could have begun. This reality precludes the theory of evolution from progressing until these physical constants already exist. In essence, the presence of a fine-tuned universe is strong evidence for the existence of God and the impossibility of evolution or any naturalistic process to explain all that exists.

Cosmologist Alexander Vilenkinof from Tufts University in Boston Vilenkinof writes:

All the evidence we have says that the universe had a beginning.”

The fact that the universe is not infinite nor eternal in any state and the fact that anthropic constants are observable and empirical, these two realities become incontrovertible arguments for the existence of the universe as a direct creation by God.

Those who claim that God does not exist, simply do not have the present capacity to understand or accept that a Being like this could exist. By His very nature and claimed abilities, the kind of Being or God that we are describing, is beyond the capacity of  any earthbound person to comprehend. The idea that a person could simply speak and the universe would come into existence, is impossible for some people to grasp. Nevertheless, this is the God who is presented by the Bible.

For who in the heavens can be compared to the Lord? Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord?… The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; the world and all its fullness, You have founded them. The north and the south, You have created them  ~Psalms 89:9-12

Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.  ~Psalms 90:2

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.  ~Psalms 33:6

God Is Understood By The Things He Has Made

As human beings we understand that everything which exists, has a cause. Since the Universe had a beginning it must also have a cause. The requirements necessary to make a universe come into existence by intelligence, requires a Being of tremendous intelligence and power. This Being must be:

  1. Eternal, no beginning or end, uncaused.
  2. Self-existent, depending upon nothing else for its existence.
  3. Transcendent of time, space, and matter
  4. Non-spatial, living outside of physical space.
  5. Immaterial
  6. Infinitely powerful in order to create an entire universe from nothing.
  7. Infinitely Intelligent to know how to create a universe and make it function.
  8. Personal and Actively participating through the entire course of the universes existence.

The God Who Is Revealed By The Bible, Asserts That He Is:

  1. Eternal, uncaused.
  2. The only God.
  3. Created all that exists.
  4. A Spirit and has no need of a physical body.
  5. Transcendent of time, space, and matter.
  6. He has no beginning and no end.
  7. Perfect in every regard.
  8. Impossible for Him to lie
  9. Impossible for Him to do evil.
  10. Knows everything and there is nothing He must learn.
  11. Never changes.
  12. Eternally loving, patient, kind, merciful, and full of grace.
  13. Expresses wrath against the imperfection of sin and will punish and banish evil sin and death for eternity.
  14. Has sent His Son as the only Savior of the World.
  15. Has physically manifested Himself as Jesus, The Messiah.
  16. There is no other God like Him
  17. All other god’s are frauds masquerading as god and are really demons (fallen angels) who are worshipped by human beings who think they are god’s.
  18. He claims unlimited power and that nothing is too hard for Him.
  19. He is personal and actively involved in every pico second of time.

Who Created God?

The Law of Cause and Effect states that every material effect must have an adequate antecedent or simultaneous cause. The God who is described by the Bible is a Spirit Being and therefore is not governed by any physical law.

Jesus speaking: “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”  ~John 4:24

Stephen Hawking has found a point of impasse for himself due to a fundamental misunderstanding of God’s existence as a non-material, Spirit-Being. Based on Hawking’s interpretation of the Law of Cause and Effect, he does not understand how a Creator could exist before the Big Bang since time, space, and matter did not exist before that moment. This assertion was first proposed by Einstein. To Hawking, a Creator must have a cause and without anything existing prior to the Big Bang, there would be no mechanism to allow a Creator to come into existence.

One of the common problems that I have encountered with people who do not believe that God exists is in their limited understanding of things eternal. Hawking and Einstein are both geniuses concerning physics and mathematics. They are, however, slightly inept when it comes to the nature of God. For that matter, all men are ignorant of God’s nature apart from what He has told us about Himself in the Bible.

The idea of a Being of unlimited knowledge and power, with an eternal existence is beyond our present capacity as human beings. This does not mean that a being that is non-material could not be eternal.

Many years ago I reached a place of impossibility in trying to understand how God could have no beginning. I determined that given there is no other logical explain for God other than the Bible, I would accept what God said about Himself concerning His eternal existence. A conversation between Moses and God in the Book of Exodus, gives us a hint for God’s true eternal nature.

When Moses asked the Lord what His name is, He replied, “I AM.”

This intrigued me for it was quite unlike the explanations that a majority of Theologians give us.

By saying “I AM,” God is stating His eternal nature. He simply exists, always has. He does not say “I was,” in the sense that His existence began at some point in the past. He does not speak of an existence that will end at some point in the future. “I AM,” is the perfect definition of an eternal Being with no beginning or end. “I AM, I just exist.”

One of the requirements that God places upon human beings is that we must first accept that He is God, eternal, with no cause, before we can go any further. God knew that we would not be able, in our present state, to understand a Being with no beginning so He asks that we just accept this fact, based upon the evidence of the universe that He left for us to examine.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.  ~Hebrews 11:6

People often speak of faith as though it were some sort of mindless leap into the unknown. In truth, faith is based upon the tremendous evidence that God has given us. We see the immensity complexity and orderly manner in which He created the universe.

We learn that the process of expansion that began the universe was controlled to exact a specific outcome.

We discover that scientists are surprised by the extreme low rate of entropy that existed during the universe’s initial chaotic state.

We read that leading theoretical cosmologist like Stephen Hawking have stated that he and others are surprised that the universe began with the precise rate of expansion necessary to go on expanding forever. Had it been just one part in 100 thousand million, million, the universe would have recollapsed before it ever reached its present size.[5]

If we truly understand how inexplicable the universe is, yet God had the power to create it, then it doesn’t required a lot of faith to say “Okay, I see what He has done, so I accept that God is much bigger and more magnificent than my mind can fathom. Though there is much I still don’t understand about God, based on the evidence He gave us, I will trust that He could exist apart from a cause.” That is what faith is: looking at the evidence and determining to trust what God says. Without this basic agreement, we cannot learn anything further about God.

It is a primary requirement of God in revealing Himself that man must begin with a certain amount of trust and a sincere desire to know Him before He will allow a person to know Him. If we approach the study of God with a preconceived idea that He does not exist, God hides Himself and we will not be able to discover Him. If a person approaches the study of God with a forethought that they really do not know anything about Him but wanting to learn, they open their heart and mind and make a diligent and sincere search, He will reveal Himself to this person.

Jesus explained this concept to us with these words:

So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.  ~Luke 8:18 (NLT)

Many educated people who do not believe that God exists, think that those who do believe are either not informed or naive. Apparently knowing that people who achieve advanced education also acquire a certain degree of pride with their knowledge, God determined in His wisdom to hide Himself from those who think themselves wise.

As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.” So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe.

…God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.  ~1 Corinthians 1:19-29 (NLT)

I have found that to simply accept that God is eternal and has no beginning, nor does He require a cause, I have been able to go on to understand the difficult premises that come from knowing that God created all that exists; by Himself; for Himself; sustained by Himself.

The Law of Causality as a law of natural science only applies to things which can be empirically observed, such as the natural Universe. Causality does not operate in the realm of the eternal because there is no point of origin. Hawking believes that God requires a cause, but this is only because his mind cannot conceive of a Being without a cause.

The God we are describing is Transcendent of time, space, and matter. He is Spirit so that a material universe does not have any affect upon Him. From this existence—apart from the material world, God engineered the laws of Physics and then made it possible for man to understand the universe by mathematics. Although scientists know how the universe operates, they cannot tell us why it exists in the first place or how it came into being— suddenly, after an indeterminate duration of eternity past. To understand these things, the descriptions that God makes for Himself is the only sufficiency that helps us understand who He really is and why the universe exists.

If anything existed before God, then He is not eternal. The fact that He stated His eternality and then we see the universe coming into existence out of nothing, is what we would expect from an eternal God.

If God described anything before Himself, He would also require a beginning. Because all things that have ever been, owe their existence to the eternal God, everything makes sense after we accept God’s eternality.

The Law of Cause and Effect states that every material effect must have an adequate antecedent or simultaneous cause. A proper understanding of the Law of Causality reveals that the Law does not exclude the existence of a Creator in consideration of  whether the Big Bang is true or not, since the effect of the Universe could occur simultaneous with its causal activity.

Argument From Design

Evidence for a cause does not end with the cosmological argument. Evidence of the precision which caused the universe to exist is the most persuasive evidence of a designer. This type of evidence is called: The Teleological Argument obtaining its name from the Greek word telos which means design.

This argument is based upon logic.

  1. Everything that exists of complexity, came by intelligence and engineering.
  2. The universe is the most highly complex machine that exists, by an exquisite design—requiring knowledge and engineering prowess that is infinite.
  3. The existence of the universe demands an intelligence and power that is unlimited and these qualities are adequately described by the limitless God of the Bible.

The facts of science reveal that the universe began in such a way that it was actively manipulated and controlled to make life possible. When scientists examine the manner in which the universe began they are stunned that anything but a chaotic universe should have resulted, given the manner in which the universe began.

Commencing with an extreme state of low entropy, by a controlled expansion of matter, purposely ordered to ensure the production of stars. This precise process would make the existence of second generation stars, which are necessary for the production of carbon—possible and necessary for the creation of the human body.

In addition, the anthropic constants which exist within extremely narrow margins must have occurred by intelligence, not by a natural process. Alter any of these constants even slightly and all life on earth will die. Think in simpler terns of a car radio that suddenly appears on its own in your automobile, tuned precisely to your favorite radio station. What are the chances that this could happen? The probability that the universe could arrive at the precise environment necessary for life is immensely more difficult than a radio appearing out of nowhere, tuned to the precise station the listener desires.

There are 34 Physical Constants I have described in a previous article.

Dr. Stephen Hawking was awestruck by the precision to which the universe expanded so precisely at its beginning.

“Why did the universe start out with so nearly the critical rate of expansion that separates models that recollapse from those that go on expanding forever, that even now, 10 thousand million years later, it is still expanding at nearly the critical rate? If the rate of expansion one second after the Big Bang had been smaller by even one part in 100 thousand million million, the universe would have recollapsed before it ever reached its present size.”[5]

If the universe had expanded at just one millionth of a degree slower than it did at its beginning, the expansion would have stopped and the universe would have collapsed back onto itself and ceased to exist. If the universe had expanded a millionth faster, no stars and galaxies would have formed. Without stars in galaxies, no second generation stars would have formed—from where carbon is produced.

When God formed man out of the elements that exist on earth, carbon was a fundamental compound that was necessary. Did God know before He made the universe, exactly the speed that matter would have to expand in order to produce stars later? Did He orchestrate this process so that carbon would exist later and He could use this element to make human being? This is precisely what took place and to imagine the universe happened by accident takes a lot more faith than to accept that God made it all.

The precision of the universe in its fine-tuned physical constants, makes the anthropic principle the most powerful arguments for the existence of God.

The centrifugal force of planetary movement are precisely balanced so that gravitational forces hold earth in orbit around the sun. Alter this balance, even slightly, and earth ceases to support life.

All of the laws of physics are described as a function of the velocity of light, defined as 299,792,458 meters per second. Any slight variation in the speed of light would have altered the other constants of the universe and precluded the possibility of life on earth.

The rotation of the earth takes approximately 24 hours at 1,000 miles per hour. Increase or decrease this speed of rotation and temperature fluctuations on earth would be too extreme to allow life.

Alter the 23.5 degree tilt of the earth’s axis one-half of a degree and temperature extremes kill all life on earth.

There are an estimated 122 of these anthropic constants. Cosmologist Ed Harrison said that this fine-tuned universe proves by these anthropic principles that an intelligence has designed the universe this way.

“Here is the cosmological proof of the existence of God, the design argument of Paley updated and refurbished. The fine-tuning of the universe provides prima facie evidence of deistic design.

Can we imagine a universe that begins with all its fundamental constants unfixed in value, and subsequently these constants become fixed at values determined by natural processes?“[6]

The question that must be answered is how could natural forces that have no intelligence, dial in these constants and do so, all at the same time, in order to make life possible? There is no possibility that any uncaused process, known or unknown, could create the precise environment for life by so many physical constants—all at the same time and all necessary for life—apart from the purposeful actions of an intelligent Being.
