The Messiah to be given the title of “God.”

Old Testament Prediction:

Psalms 45:6 “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.”

New Testament Fulfillment:

Hebrews 1:8 But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

Application:

It is clear that Paul believed that Psalms 45:6 was written for the Messiah and specifically, Jesus Christ. Paul’s quotation of Psalms 45:6 in context with Hebrews 1:8, defines for us exactly who Jesus is:

  1. The “Son” is Jesus Christ.
  2. The Son is “God.”
  3. Psalms 45:6 was a prophecy written for Jesus Christ.
  4. Jesus Christ is the Messiah promised by the Old Testament.

Paul received his training in the scriptures from Gamaliel.

Acts 22:3 “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers’ law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today.”

The term “at the feet of Gamaliel,” was a common phrase of that day in referring to a long tradition of those who were carefully trained in the scriptures. These students sat on chairs that were close to the ground, while the Rabbis who taught them sat on higher chairs, signifying their authority in the scriptures.

Rabban Gamaliel was a Pharisee and expert himself in the scriptures. During this time in history, these teachers of the scriptures were referred to as “Doctors of the Law.” Today we would say that he had a Doctorate in the Holy Scriptures. Gamaliel was referred to as the “Thirty-Fifth receiver of the traditions.” Gamaliel, having received the “Cabala”[1] (Kabbalah) that came from Moses at Mount Sinai, is said to have died 18 years before Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D.

It is clear from these things that Paul wrote in the New Testament, that he was also an expert in the Old Testament scriptures. He was perhaps more familiar with the Old Testament prophecies concerning the coming Messiah than any other person at that time. Paul was convinced that Jesus was the fulfillment of what he considered to be a Messianic Prophecy in Psalms 45:6. When Paul penned the words to Hebrews Chapter 1:8, But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom, he was pointing to the fact that not only was Jesus the Messiah, but that Jesus was and is the Living God.

Not only do we learn from Psalms 45:6 that God intended from the foundation of the world that the Messiah would be God, but also that Jesus was the person to whom this prophecy was written for.

There are seven Old Testament prophecies that either state or allude to the fact that the Messiah will be the Son of God. The seventh, although not referring directly to the Son” is generally understood to be a Messianic prophecy, describing the coming of God’s Son and those who are waiting for Him.

Prophecy 50 2 Samuel 7:14 “I will be his Father, and he shall be My son.”

Prophecy 57 1 Chronicles 17:13 “I will be his Father, and he shall be My son…”

Prophecy 63 Psalms 2:7 “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.’ ”

Prophecy 128 Psalms 89:26 “He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.’

Prophecy 156 Proverbs 30:4 Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name, If you know?

Prophecy 171 Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God.

Prophecy 195 Isaiah 33:2 O LORD, be gracious to us; We have waited for You.

When we examine the entirety of the Old Testament prophetic word concerning the Messiah, it is unmistakable that the intention of the full body of scripture is that we would understand that God was coming to earth in the body of a man, who would be called The Messiah.
