The Time of the End: A Marked Increase in Natural Disasters

The world has been stunned in recent months by the great increase of volcanic activity–all over the earth in Ecuador, Hawaii, Iceland, Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines and Papau New Guinea. Many are reminded of a description found in the book of Revelation where “A mountain burning with fire,” is said to be the second of the Trumpet judgements of God.

Revelation 8:8 Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood.

Is there a link between an increase in natural disasters and the events described in the Bible? Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures there are examples given in the history of the earth where the Lord has brought disaster upon the residents of our planet for the express purpose of judgement.

Genesis 6:5,7 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. So the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air.

It is estimated that as many as six billion people could have perished in the great flood described by the narrative of the book of Genesis.

During the time of Abraham, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were so filled with evil and violence that the Lord dispatched angels to destroy these two cities and all of their inhabitants.

Genesis 13:13, 19:4-5, 13 But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD. 19:1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening 19:4 Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. 19:5 And they called to Lot and said to him, Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally. 19:13 For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it.

In Numbers chapter 16, the Lord opened the ground to swallow up Korah, Dathan and Abiram for opposing Moses as the Lord’s appointed leaders.

In the New Testament, Peter was very specific in stating that after the return of Jesus He would destroy the present heavens and the earth  by a massive heat death. Later, the book of Revelation describes God creating  a new heaven and earth.

2 Peter 3:10,12 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?

Revelation 21:1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.

The entire purpose of the Book of Revelation is the unveiling of God’s judgement upon the earth for the rejection of Jesus Christ as the only Savior of the world. By means of 21 separate judgements, the Lord will destroy most of the planet. Through seven Seals, seven Trumpets and seven Bowl judgments, nearly two-thirds of the population of earth will perish by the use of natural disasters.

Revelation chapter 8 describes an onslaught of meteors and asteroids that will strike the earth, described as burning a third of the earth with fire. During the last three and one half years of the Great Tribulation, the sun’s radiation will be increased substantially, burning men, and causing sores upon their bodies. Locusts that are empowered by demons will torment men for five months.

Matthew 24:29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Revelation 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.

During this time, men will seek death for the torment they are experiencing, but no one will be able to die for five months.

Revelation 9:5-6 And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. 6 In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

The earth will be literally moved out of it’s place by massive tectonic plate displacement, or “polar axis shift”. Every continent, every island, every mountain will be displaced–resulting is massive property damage and loss of human life.

Isaiah 24:20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, And shall totter like a hut

Psalms 18:7 Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations of the hills also quaked and were shaken, Because He was angry.

Revelation 8:7-8 The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up. Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood.

Revelation 8:10 Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water.

Revelation 16:9 And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.

Revelation 9:3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

Revelation 9:5 And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man.

Revelation 6:14 Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.

In the Book of Matthew chapter 24, as Jesus is describing the period of time just prior to His return, He said that there will be a marked increase in natural dissasters. These events will indicate to those who are present on the earth, that His return in eminent.

Matthew 24:7-30 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows… mmediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

According to the EM-DAT, the international disaster database, the total natural disasters reported each year has been steadily increasing in recent decades, from 78 in 1970 to 348 in 2004.

 em Data

These disasters include droughts, tsunamis, hurricanes, typhoons and floods and have been increasing over the past 25 years. In 1980, there were only about 100 such disasters reported per year. That number has risen to over 300 per year since 2000. Since these records have been kept, there has been an increase in natural disasters of over five-hundred percent.

The data regarding the marked increase in frequency and intensity of all natural disasters is compelling. It is not a coincidence that there has been a greater number of recent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes in various parts of the world. Jesus made it clear that when we begin to see these things taking place in diverse places, all over the earth, these natural events would indicate to the residents of earth that His supernatural return was near. In fact, the entire purpose of the Bible is to demonstrate that God is the author of all 66 books of the Bible.

By predictive and fulfilled prophecy, God demonstrates His knowledge of events from outside time. There are some estimates that the Bible contains over 3,500 predictions, of which, more than 2,500 have already been fulfilled–literally and perfectly.

Jesus told us in advance of His return that the earth would show signs of the last days by an increase in frequency and severity of natural disasters. He warned us so that the wise would not be caught unaware. To the foolish and unprepared, these catastrophic events will leave many unprepared for the coming judgement of God.

The Lord has appointed a day in which He will judge the hearts and deeds of all people. He has chosen His own dear Son as the adjudicator of His law and the final authority over the whole earth.

1Timothy 2:3-5 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.

The Lord is not willing that any person should perish, but that all men would come to repentance and have an opportunity to obtain salvation and eternal life. For this reason, the predictions and fulfillment of natural disasters has the purpose of bringing us into an awareness that there is an eternal God who orders and controls this universe. He has power over the natural elements of the Universe and often uses them to speak to us and confirm to our heart that He exists and has the ability to control the events of human existence.

Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse...

It is the hope of this writer that as you see the increase in natural disasters occurring over the face of the earth during these perilous days that you will remember that the same God who made all things, also loves you and desires that you would come into a personal relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.

We are in the midst of the final judgement of God and the end of all things is at hand.

It is no accident that Ebola has arrived in the United States in the midst of the Supreme court refusing to hear any case in opposition to same sex marriage.

Beginning in 1964 when prayer was removed from public schools, America began her abandonment of God.[1] Continuing in 1973 with the Supreme Court’s decision to allow abortion on demand, The United States joined in the practices of the Amorites in sacrificing their children for the sake of convenience and pleasure.[2] On October 11, 2001, the first homeland attack by a terrorist group took the lives of thousands of citizens, beginning a stunning warning by the Lord that judgement was near.

In late September, 2014, the first person documented with Ebola–came to the United States. Experts at the Center for Disease Control have stated that they have every confidence that an epidemic will be stopped with this one case. Whether this remains true will be determined in the coming months.

When the Lord warned the people of Israel that their abandonment of God would result in judgement–they also ignored the Lord. In Jeremiah chapter 24, the prophet warned the inhabitants of Judah:

Jeremiah 24:10 And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence among them, till they are consumed from the land that I gave to them and their fathers.’ ”

Could a similar fate already be upon the inhabitants of America? We are a nation birthed by God–brought into existence by supernatural means, protected under His care for over 200 years. God warned all nations that those who honor and obey God will be blessed. Those nations who forget the Lord and do not honor or obey Him, will be abandoned to “the sword, the famine, and the pestilence.

Islam has brought “the sword” to the United States in 2001. Today their is a “famine” regarding the word of God in America. Pastors do not know the Bible and subsequently they are not teaching the people the word of God. As a result, a nation who formerly regarded and honored God’s word has found that it no longer has any use for God, nor His word. Finally, “the pestilence” has come to the United States, in the form of the Ebola virus. Judgment has come to America, just as it did to Israel.

Our future as a nation will be determined by our present decisions. If we continue down our current path–as it appears we most certainly will, this once great nation who has formerly honored God, will no longer exist.

These are the days in which Jesus wrote and warned. Days where men think themselves more wise than God. Times in which people disregard the word of God and live their lives according to the imaginations and dictates of their own hearts. These are the days for which the Book of Revelation was written. We are about to enter the Time of Tribulation for which the earth has never experienced, nor ever will again.

Matthew 24:21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Revelation 2:22 Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.

[1] 1.School District of Abington Township, Pennsylvania v. Schempp. (1999). Madalyn Murray’s lawsuit, Murray v. Curlett lawsuit, which led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling ending official Bible-reading in American public schools in 1963 contributed to the removal of compulsory Bible reading from the public schools of the United States, and has had lasting and significant effects. Until the lawsuit, it was commonplace for students to participate in many types of religious activities while at school, including religious instruction itself. Nonreligious students were compelled to participate in such activities and were not usually given any opportunity to opt out. The Murray suit was combined with an earlier case, so the Court might have acted without Murray’s intervention. With the success of the lawsuit, the intent of the Constitution with regard to the relationship between church and state again came under critical scrutiny and has remained there to this day. While students do continue to pray in public schools, even in organized groups (such as “See You at the Pole”), the lawsuit disallowed schools from including prayer as a compulsory activity required of every student. The success of O’Hair’s lawsuit led to subsequent lawsuits by Mormon and Catholic families in Texas in 2000 to limit compulsory prayer at school-sponsored football games. 3. From Wikipedia: “In two landmark decisions, Engel v. Vitale (1962) and Abington School District v. Schempp (1963), the US Supreme Court established what is now the current prohibition on state-sponsored prayer in schools. While the Engel decision held that the promulgation of an official state-school prayer stood in violation of the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause (thus overruling the New York Courts’ decisions), Abington held that Bible readings and other (state) school-sponsored religious activities were prohibited.Following these two cases came the Court’s decision in Lemon v. Kurtzman (1971), a ruling that established the Lemon test for religious activities within schools. The Lemon test states that in order to be constitutional under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment any practice sponsored within state run schools (or other public, state sponsored activities) must adhere to the following three criteria:Have a secular purpose; Must neither advance nor inhibit religion; and Must not result in an excessive entanglement between government and religion” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_prayer.
