Daily Devotional: October 19

Heaven Is Your Home:

When traveling to a foreign land, you don’t get too comfortable there. You know that in a short time, you will be going home. For this reason, you live differently than those who live in that land. You will be careful to not get caught up in that foreign land, so that you miss your flight home.

I want you to think of earth as a temporary stop during a journey that is leading you home. Don’t look for ways to become a part of this foreign land. Don’t build a life on earth, because you won’t be there that long.

Spend your time on people and relationships, and try to help them understand who I am and the salvation I offer. This way, when you board your final flight for home, you will be bringing many friends with you. When you arrive here, then you can put down roots and really enjoy your life as citizens of heaven.

But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control. ~Philippians 3:20-21 (NLT)

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves can break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust can destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For wherever your treasure is, there also will your heart will be. ~Matthew 6:19-21 (RCR)

Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks. ~Luke 12:35-36 (NLT)

So we do not look at what we can see right now, the troubles all around us, but we look forward to the joys in heaven which we have not yet seen. The troubles will soon be over, but the joys to come will last forever. ~2 Corinthians 4:18 (TLB)

For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all of God’s people, which come from your confident hope of what God has reserved for you in heaven. You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News. ~Colossians 1:4-5 (NLT)

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. ~Colossians 3:1-3 (NLT)

Your words, Jesus, cause me to remember the times when I am at the airport and ready to board my flight. I never think about leaving to go anywhere else. I am just excited and thinking about my destination.

I see now that my view of this earthly life is similar to this example. If we really understand who we are and what is ahead of us, we will not be seeking to be distracted by anything that will take our attention from heaven and meeting You.

While I am waiting now here on earth to board my flight to heaven, keep my thoughts and plans on You, Lord, and the important work of making You known to the world. Give me opportunities to share You with people and to live my life with grace and kindness, so that people can see You in me and want to know where my hope comes from.
