Many critics of the Bible, state that the long day of Joshua in which the sun is described as standing still, is impossible—thereby proving the Bible is not true.

Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. ~Joshua 10:12-13

Did You Know That It Is Possible For The Sun To Appear As Though It Has Stopped?

The earth rotates at 1,000 miles per hour. If this rotation slowed by 50 percent, the day would last twice as long. The sun would appear to stand still.

For a short duration, this would be possible. The sun would not be affected, neither would the other planets. Earth would only experience minor changes if the rotation slowed for by 50 percent for less than 12 hours. People on earth would not notice this slow down in rotation, with the exception of an increase in earthquakes, storms and wind speed.

The effects would be minimal and would not destroy earth or human life. The only perceivable change would be the sun slowing in its progression into darkness and result in a much longer day.

There is also evidence from ethnology in other cultures around the world, that there was a long day? In the writings of the ancient Chinese there is a legend of a long day. The Incas of Peru and the Aztecs of Mexico also have a similar record. The Babylonians and Persians record a story of a day that was miraculously extended. Herodotus describes that while in Egypt, a priest showed him their temple records which describes a day that was twice the length of any day that was ever recorded.

If we can believe that God has the power and technology to create this universe from nothing and prepare it by nearly 209 Fine-Tuned Constants so that human beings could live on earth, He certainly has the power to slow the rotation of the earth for a short time.

There are many things that we don’t know about the universe but we go on and live our lives without any problems. I don’t know, nor does anyone else, how God does most of what He does. I don’t need to. I have seen His power in creating the universe, earth, and human life. I don’t need Him to explain everything to me for the time being.

I know that in just a short time, I will be there with Him, and then all of my questions will be answered.

I do know that man is a sinner and he needs a Savior. I know that Jesus came to earth as God in the form of a man and completed all of the 400 plus Messianic prophecies required for the Messiah. I know that faithful men recorded the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus when He died for my sins and that when I received Him into my life 44 years ago, everything changed.

If the book of Joshua says that God caused the sun to stand still, I know from science that it is possible for earth to temporarily slow down and not destroy the planet. I don’t have any problem with this, neither should anyone else.
