Although the prophecies of the Old Testament describe the Messiah as God, specific predictions such as the prophecies written by Isaiah, also define Him as: pouring out His soul unto death. Possessing the power of creation and destruction, the Savior of the world will use His great abilities to save, not destroy.
Isaiah 53:12b Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death...
When the soldiers come to arrest Jesus, the testimony of John 18:3-6 describes Him as: knowing all things that would come upon Him. This language indicates that Jesus believed that He was fully in control of every event that took place. The soldiers were allowed to arrest Him because He permitted it to happen.
John 18:3-6 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
Although men of authority come to arrest Jesus, it is He who interrogates them. Jesus asks the soldiers, Whom are you seeking? They answered Him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus then declares, I am He. As the breath of these words leave His mouth, the power of the Eternal God that is within Jesus causes the soldiers to fall backwards to the ground.[1]
When Pilate questions Jesus regarding the serious charges made against Him by the Pharisees, Jesus does not answer in His own defense. He only speaks to Pilate when the Roman Procurator claims that He has authority over Jesus to free Him or put Him to death.
Matthew 27:13-14 Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
John 19:10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?” 11 Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above.
Knowing well all of the prophecies that were written concerning Him, Jesus demonstrated His immense power that remained under great restraint. Although Jesus’ arrest appears to be a tragic end to His wonderful life of ministry, it was in fact a well-orchestrated event that was ordained by God to take place at this precise moment. What we discover by our examination of all the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah is that every event which occurred during the arrest, trial, and execution of Jesus was ordained by God before time itself began.
Jesus confirmed these facts in many of the statements that He made during the occurrence of these events.
John 10:18 No one takes My life from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.
As He freely makes His life an offering for sin, Jesus holds nothing back. In the language of Isaiah 53:12, He Pours out His soul unto death.
Isaiah 53:12 predicts that the Messiah will not shield Himself from the wrath of God against all our sins. Jesus bore the full measure of God’s fury that should have come against each one of us. As a result of His willingness to bear all of our punishment, He will not use the power that He has as God to stop the events of His arrest and death. Jesus will allow everything to happen and submit Himself to the arresting authorities, the false trials that will ensue throughout the night, and the unjust condemnation of His life for crimes He never committed. Jesus did all this to pay the great price that was owed to God for the sins committed by every human being since Adam.
Jesus poured out His life—even to the point of death, withholding nothing in giving all that He could for us. He did these things while fully in control of every detail of His death, and with full knowledge that He was fulfilling all of the prophecies of the Messiah, as described throughout the Old Testament.
