The Nashville Statement Simply States What God Has Already Said

If you read the comments of critics  who object to the Nashville Statement, one might imagine that this document contains unintelligent, unsupportable, and incorrect statements. When we actually examine the Nashville Statement we find that it simply restates what God has already said in the Bible since the beginning of creation.

A recent tactic of the LGBT community has attempted to redefine the Biblical text concerning human sexuality, marriage, and gender identity. Labeling the Christian position on these important subjects, writers have called statements in the Nashville Statement as “a tortuous interpretation of the Bible.” If we simply read the entire text of the Bible concerning human sexuality, we find that the Nashville Statement is precisely what the Bible teaches.

As created  beings, we do not have to right to redefine the nature of our existence, nor our function as a part of creation. God made male and female for specific purposes. Because God is the Creator of all that exists, He alone has the right to determine how His creation must live.

Last week I published a post here in answer to many questions that I have recieved concerning whether the Old Testament laws are applicable today. This is an important subject to address as many contend that people today are not under the strict laws of Moses and can live as a LGBT person and also be a Christian.

In 2016, I published a new book in response to hundreds of question regarding The Same-Sex Controversy: “Sodom and Gomorrah: The Same-Sex Controversy.” Many Christians are surprised to learn that it was Jesus, the LORD, who accompanied the two angels that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. The reason that this is important today is that LGBT persons have asserted that Jesus never said anything about LGBT persons, nor did he condemn this behavior.

What we find when we read the Bible is that Jesus is called the LOGOS, the Word of God. It was Jesus who is the author of all the text in the Old Testament which condemns sex outside of one man and one woman in marriage.

When we arrive at the New Testament we find that the early Christian church in the book of Acts defined what the requirements were for those who would trust Jesus as their Savior as encompassing three requirements: Not eating meat that had been sacrificed to idols, for the sake of conscience, eating meat from animals that had been properly bled-out during processing for food, and sexual immorality.

Known to God from eternity are all His works. 19 Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, 20 but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood. —Acts 15:18-20

This means that the Old Testament laws concerning sodomy, lesbianism, adultery, and fornication, are still applicable for anyone who will follow Christ. In the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 6, Paul describes Christians who practice homosexuality or lesbianism as not being able to enter the kingdom of heaven.

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. —1 Corinthians 6:9-11

God has not redefined the correct relationship of human sexuality in our generation. He still requires that men and women live as their biological identity defines. He still requires that only a man and a woman may marry. He still condemns sexual relationships between two men or two women. He still condemns sex outside of marriage. Nothing has changed except the opinions of those who do not like what God said and seek to redefine the Bible to fit their agenda.

What is most shocking about the comments in opposition to the Nashville Statement that have been made by people who claim to be Christians, is that they don’t know that these 14 articles are simply stating what the Bible has been saying all along.
