We all want to know what motivated Stephen Paddock to brutally murder 59 people and gravely injure more than 527 at a Country Music Festival near the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegans, Nevada. How could any human being conceive of such brutality?
Growing up with a father who was a criminal, absent from the home was a difficulty. Feeling anger over the way that people treated him. Being rejected, mocked, or abused in his early years. All of these are common reasons that experts look for in diagnosing later behavior problems of individuals. Whatever it was that accumulated in the mind of Stephen Paddock that will be found later as causes of his horrific acts, these are not the true reasons that men become killers. There is a deeper, spiritual dimension to all human beings that is the ultimate cause of all emotional difficulties. Science often looks to physical defects as the reason that people become mass murderers. They fail to realize that human beings are far more than just physical. We have an inner spiritual person that cannot be seen that is also affected by the things that are done to us and the decisions we make throughout our life.
It is important to realize that the kind of evil we have seen in Las Vegas is demonically motivated and directed by one who seeks the total destruction of all human beings. We live in a world that is under the dominion of satan whom the Bible calls “the god of this world.” The Bible describes certain individuals as blinded by satan because they do not believe in God and have been taken captive by the devil to do his will. It is the purpose of the devil to kill and take to hell as many as possible. People who have a certain disposition towards anger, frustration, hurt, or a desire for vengeance are vulnerable for satan to deceive and use as pawns to wreak havoc on an many victims as possible.
Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. —2 Corinthians 4:4
The devil does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. —John 10:10
The Bible describes the devil’s anger at being cast out of heaven as so intense that he has sought the annihilation of all human beings.
Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time. —Revelation 12:12
If not for the sovereign power of God to control satan no human being would be left alive. At the time that satan sought to ascend his throne above the throne of God and was cast out of heaven, a mass horde of one third of the angels in heaven followed the him in rebellion. These evil beings are present on earth today in greater numbers than the human population and seek the death and misery of all people on this planet.
One of the achievements of Jesus at the cross was to permanently destroy the works of the devil and to assign him a place in hell where he would never be heard from again. After the return of Jesus to earth at the end of the seven year Tribulation, the devil will be chained in hell for one thousand years. At the conclusion of this term, he will be released for a short time to gather those whose hearts are in rebellion against God, to fight one final battle on earth. Jesus will slay this army with the words of His mouth and assign the devil, his demons, and all those who follow him, to the Lake of Fire—forever.
He who destroys is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. —1 John 3:8
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while. —Revelation 20:1-3
Though Jesus has defeated satan at the cross, He has allowed the devil to coexist with us until the final day of redemption. It appears that the purpose God has for satan is to offer us a choice. There are only two kingdoms in the universe—the kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness. We can serve the Lord, or we can serve satan, there is no neutral ground. A person might object to the limitation of only two choices, but this is nevertheless the only two options that God has given us. If a person will not serve Jesus, then he is automatically defaulted to serve in satan’s kingdom. Someone might claim that he does not serve God nor satan, but neutrality is not an option that God recognizes. Jesus said that those who are not with Him are against Him.
(Jesus said) He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters. —Luke 11:23
The frightening thing about those who reject God and are defaulted to satan’s kingdom is that they have absolutely no protection from God. The devil can do anything he wants to those who are without Christ’s blood to cover and protect them. These persons are taken captive by the devil to do his will. All those who have committed mass murder on the earth, did so, because they were filled with these ideas by their master, the devil.
All of the violence, suffering, murder and evil that exists in the world today is orchestrated by satan and his demons.
Since 1964 when prayer and the Bible were removed from our public schools, the United States has progressively moved farther and farther from God. The total number of atheists in the U.S. in 1970 was less than 2 percent. Today that number is close to 20 percent. When people lose their consciousness of God, they naturally move towards Godless behavior.
Noted mass murderer, Jeffrey Dahmer, stated in his final years that the primary reason he murdered so many was because he was taught that God didn’t exist. In the mind of Dahmer, If there is no ultimate judge for all human beings and our death is the end of our existence, he felt that he could do whatever he wanted.

It is a fact of human society and all nations which have perished before us that when the citizens lose their consciousness of God, the entire nation begins to collapse from within.
The reason that we see a massive increase in gun violence in the United States in the past 50 years is due to our abandonment of God. Without the fear of an ultimate judgement people cast off restraint and do whatever they want. The idea that a Godless society can be moral and good has been disproven by every communist/atheist society that has existed.. As we examine history we see that only those nations who have feared God, survived. The greatest and most powerful nation ever to exist on earth is the United States of America. From the beginning, our founders recognized the inherent fallen nature of human beings and the need to install righteous laws that were based upon the laws of God.
The framers of the Constitution recognized that evil me do not recognize laws and will seek to destroy those who are good and want to live in peace. These men understood that when people read the Bible and have an awareness of God, His law, and a final judgment, this is the only way that civil societies may continue. Not that the government would force religion upon its citizens but that they would create an environment where God and His word were visible reminders that we do not exist in this world alone. When a nation believes that God exists and He will hold us accountable for how we treat each other, the sanctify of human life will be preeminent in the minds of its citizens.
When a nation loses it consciousness of God, it quickly degenerates into what we are seeing today in America. A nation that once worked together as one and sought understanding, peace, and to love our neighbor, has digressed into a selfish, godless nation.
Every nation that has abandoned God, has ceased to exist. These societies collapsed from within by their lack of consciousness of a Creator who orders and governs the world. This is particularly true in atheistic nations and is a fact of man’s history on earth. Every nation that began with the idea that God was not necessary, has ended in ruin.
Hearts, Not Guns
Those in opposition to gun ownership constantly assert that we need stronger gun laws. Any intelligent person knows that laws never really alter human behavior. What people need is a change of heart. They need to see other humans beings as made in the image of God; precious, and important. When people believe that they will face an ultimate judgement for the way they have lived their lives, they will treat people better. We will have less violence, more respect for human life, and the rights of other people.
Bring a consciousness of God back to America and we will see a rapid drop in gun violence and the horrific acts of murder that we have seen in our nation the past ten years.
Increased Violence In The World
The Bible states that in the last days of earth before the final judgement arrives, the devil will come down to earth with great wrath because he knows that his time is short.
For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time. —Revelation 12:12
A secondary reason we have seen a massive increase in violence on the earth is because we are in the last days before Jesus returns. Jesus also said that before He came again people would turn away from God and most would no longer believe.
Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” —Luke 18:8
Stephen Paddock did not believe in God. He had no belief in a coming judgement. He believed that when he died his life was over and there was nothing afterwards. He was deceived by the devil who took him captive and used him to destroy the lives of so many others.
What Happened To Stephen Paddock When He Died?
The Bible describes the events that take place immediately after the death of one who kills and destroyed the lives of others as horrific. They are met by hordes of demons who take them violently to hell where they tear these people to pieces and torment them forever and ever.
They all shall speak and say to you: ‘Have you also become as weak as we Have you become like us? Your glory has been brought down to hell…the maggot is spread under you, and worms cover you.’ —Isaiah 14:10-11
Men like the Las Vegas shooter who murdered so many on Sunday, October 1, 2017 have a horde of demons waiting. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. These men and women who have rejected the salvation that God has offered and deny God His rightful place in their lives, are seen by God as children of the devil. He assigns these evil men and women who take many lives, a place of unbelievable torment. Those who determine to do such things should remember that God is the punisher of all who destroy human lives and they will not escape. Jesus said the following regarding the man who had died without God and found himself in hell:
Then he cried and said, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ —Luke 16:24
Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast … —Revelation 14:9-11
The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And those who follow him will will be tormented day and night forever and ever. —Revelation 20:10
The time has come for those who do believe in Jesus as their Savior to pray for our nation that we might return to God. The only hope for America and our continued existence is that the individual hearts of people would be turned back to God and changed. If we continue in our rejection of God from American life, we will perish. If we take a stand as believers and ask God to return us to our former place of reliance upon God and His word, we will survive and continue as the greatest nation on earth.
