It is a common response by most people, to try and change laws and limit access to firearms in order to stop gun violence. Many say that we should limit access to certain types of guns and enact laws to prevent the purchase of firearms by persons who are suffering from mental illness.
Although these measures may have some effect, they do not address the real problem that is at the root of all human violence and a desire to kill.
According to the word of God, we all have a basic nature that moves us towards sin. Regardless of how hard we might try to modify our behavior, we still have the same nature. Only by becoming a new person can we truly begin to exhibit different behavior that comes from a changed heart.
Jesus said that this process is called being “Born Again.” One of the Pharisees of Israel came to Jesus by night to ask Him questions about the things He had said and done. Jesus told Nicodemus that unless a person is born again, they cannot understand the things of God, nor can they see the true nature of the world and the human condition.
Jesus explained that just as we all enter the world by a physical birth, in order to obtain eternal life, we must enter by a spiritual birth.
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. ~John 3:3-6 (NLT)
This happens at the moment that any person trusts in Jesus as their Savior and experiences the removal of their sins.
When this happens, we are no longer the same person, though we may look exactly the same on the outside. The transformation takes place on the inside where the true person we are, resides. Although we live in a physical body, in reality we are spirit-beings. Without Christ, our spirit is dead to God and unable to know Him or understand His ways. With Christ we become a new person and this change lasts forever.
Paul later wrote that when we trust in Jesus, we become a New Creation, and all the old things pass away, everything becomes new.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. ~2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

The way that human society seeks to change the actions of people in the world is through behavior modification. Although these methods often do change behavior externally, they never change the very nature of the person. Our wrong words and actions come about because of who we are. It is our nature to sin because this is what we do best. When Jesus comes into our life, He changes us, first, on the inside. As our hearts are transformed, we being to reflect these changes on the outside in our words and behavior.
No one becomes a perfect person the instant they trust Jesus and are born again. We have the desire to be better people and we will often have success in this effort; we will also still make mistakes and fail. The difference is that our nature has changed so that we are different people. When we sin, we have forgiveness. Our conscience does not bear the guilt of all our past mistakes and regrets because they are all forgiven and exist no longer. This gives us encouragement and hope to carry on and continue trying to be more like Jesus is all our life.
If we truly want to change gun violence in the United States, we must seek to return our people to God and find a new life in Jesus Christ. It is only by being born again by the Sprit of God can we become new and better people.
It is because our nation has moved so far away from God that we see the result of our estrangement from Him. People no longer read the Bible. They have ceased from attending church to hear God’s word. People have moved away from God and the result is seen by increases in violence, crime, and the destruction of human lives.
For those of us who know Jesus, we can pray for our nation every day, to return to God and start reading the Bible again. These were the former foundations that made our nation great and gave our people safety and security. We should remember to tell people about Jesus and the new life He offers every person. If we can do our part in bringing our nation back to God, we can change the course we are on.
If America does not return to God, it will only be a matter of time before the lawlessness and violence we are seeing now will destroy everything we hold precious.
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. ~2 Chronicles 7:14
