The world will wake this morning with news that perhaps the most intelligent man our planet has ever known, has died. In spite of Stephen Hawking’s intelligence and all that he knew about the universe, he repeatedly denied that God exists.
“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”
“There is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, and science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works.”
“We are each free to believe what we want, and it’s my view that the simplest explanation is; there is no god. No one created our universe, and no one directs our fate.” ~Stephen Hawking
Every person who sees the universe, earth, and human life, understands that God must exist. These things could not come about by random chance or the process of billions of years. Stephen Hawking knew this and so also do all of us. The reason we know this is true is because God said that the universe stands as all the proof anyone will ever need to know for certain God exists.
For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. ~Romans 1:20-21 (NLT)
Just one week ago, Hawking stated that he knows exactly what existed prior to the beginning of the universe, “nothing.” After a new episode of Star Talk with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Dr. Hawking talked about what was present before our universe commenced. Although there are many theoretical explanations for how there could be nothing and suddenly everything came into existence, none of these ideas are based upon evidence that can be tested or observed.
What we do know, is exactly what Stephen Hawking admitted. Before the universe began, there was nothing. No time, space, or matter. Nothing to make a universe, no space to put it in, no time to mark the duration or events of the universe.
It is interesting that this is precisely what the first line of the first book of the Bible states: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” The Hebrew word used for “created,” is bara, to create from nothing. Before man ever knew that there was nothing prior to the universe, God had already told Moses to write that before He created our universe and earth, nothing existed. Simultaneously with bringing the universe into existence, God created the material to make everything, and did so ex nihilo, out of nothing.
Intellect Does Not Convey Wisdom
The question we might ask is “why the world’s smartest man, doesn’t know that God exists?”
The interesting thing about intelligence is that it does not necessarily convey to us, wisdom. The Bible states that “the beginning of wisdom is a sincere reverence for God” (Proverbs 1:7). In the book of 1 Corinthians, Paul uses a lengthy discourse to tell us that God purposely chose what this world considers foolish, to confound those who think themselves so wise. God chose the cross of Jesus to save anyone who believes. This makes no sense to the intellectual because he cannot understand how the whole world could be saved by one man dying on a cross.
The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.” So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. ~1 Corinthians 1:18-20 (NLT)
God chose a way to Him that the most simple person on the planet can understand. Be willing to turn from your sins and receive Jesus death on the cross for your sins, and God will save you.
Stephen Hawking would not humble himself and acknowledge that the universe is far to complex, exceedingly organized, and evidently engineered, to be an accident. God said that Dr. Hawking knew He was the source of the universe, but God also said that the intellect of man can prohibit him from admitting this truth.
It is a fact that knowledge causes pride, and pride always prevents people from humbling themselves before God.
…We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge causes pride, but love educates. And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing. ~1 Corinthians 8:1-2 (RCR)
Jesus said that unless we all become like children and humble ourselves before God, we cannot get into heaven.
Then Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. ~Matthew 18:3-4 (NLT)
Living What You Know Is True
Knowing something to be true and living like you believe it are two different things. The heart of man at its basic foundation is evil and constantly towards evil (Genesis 6:5). Even when we know important things like the existence of God, many people will live out their lives denying what they know in their heart to be true.
People do this because to admit that God exists is to place ourselves under the authority of His power. If God exists then we are all subject to Him and are responsible to God for how we live on his earth, and in His universe.
We Will Give An Account
It would be sad enough that Stephen Hawking missed his opportunity for eternal life, by his pride and unwillingness to turn from his sins, to Jesus and be saved but there is a greater tragedy that many do not understand. What we say and do while living on earth, has consequences. If we spend our life denying God and telling people that He does not exist, then we will give an account for our words.
(Jesus Said:) But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” ~Matthew 12:36-37
Not only did Dr. Hawking deny himself heaven, he prevented millions of others from also obtaining heaven. How many people read and heard the words of Stephen Hawking who said that God does not exist, and went on to live their own lives without God? People believe that a man who is smarter than all the rest of us, and states that God does not exist, must know something we don’t. There were countless thousands that were lost be the words of Stephen Hawking.
We will all be held accountable for everything we say and do. This is especially important when we use our words to cause others to forfeit their opportunity for eternal life.
Woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had never been born.” ~Mark 14:21
But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. ~Matthew 10:32-33
I pray that you will not make the same mistake with your own life, but realize that everything written about Jesus is true. He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one makes it to heaven without Him.
Stephen Hawking will spend eternity regretting his decision. We mourn for his eternal loss. What does it profit a man if he becomes the smartest man in the world, but then loses his own soul?
