The Miracles Of The Bible: Evidence Of A Transcendent, All Powerful God

Rembrandt, Life of Christ, c.1630

Many people scoff at the miracles described by the Bible, stating that they are myths, fabrications, and never happened. The men who were there and saw these things happen, state emphatically that they are telling the truth: “This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also may continue to believe.”[1] These men were there—we were not. Every event of antiquity can only be known to us, if the people who saw these events, recorded them.

A basic rule for determining reliability for all ancient documents that assert eyewitness testimony is that every document should be assumed trustworthy, unless it can be shown unreliable through the burden of proof.

One of the techniques utilized in document analysis is that when an examiner uses the presumption that the subject is lying, the test will always be self-refuting. The presumption that a person is always lying, while performing any examination for truth, is pointless, since the conclusion is already made before the examination has begun.[2]

Unless we assume a general presumption of truth in every testimony, we will never be capable of determining whether anything is actually true. The only effective method that actually allows a professional examiner to determine truthful testimony is the presumption of truth at the onset.[3]

We Have Already Seen Empirical Evidence For God

If we have a hard time believing that supernatural events can happen, we should remember that the entire universe is a supernatural event. There is no possibility that the universe we live in, happened by accident. The universe was formerly described as eternal; today we know that it had a beginning. How it began and expanded into stars, planets, and galaxies, is a matter of debate. One fact is certain and is no longer unknown; the universe exists because of fine-tuned physical constants that ensure its existence.

In order for the universe to begin when there was nothing, we must explain how everything can come from nothing. We must explain how the commencement of the universe ensued at that moment and not before. We must explain how the universe, a non-intelligent material thing, knew that gravity and electromagnetism were required, at a precise moment, when the universe began.

Natural processes are not capable of foreknowledge. If the universe is merely a natural event, how did it know before it began that gravity and electromagnetism were required at -430 Plank Time, or the universe would never expand and produce stars much later?

A natural process like evolution is not capable of knowing or requiring any event before the process begins. If we find that events have happened which require a mind to initiate events necessary to ensure a continuation of the natural process, this disqualifies any event as purely natural, accidental, or happenstance.

Atheist scientists who do not believe that a Being is responsible for the universe, posit a natural cause: a prior universe that existed, which caused our universe. We must ask, where did this prior universe come from? How did it begin? Whenever we add difficulty to the origin of the universe, all that is accomplished is a greater need for a thinking mind, rather than an accidental process.

If there was an infinite number of other universes in existence before ours, we would still have to explain how the first universe began, and what process permitted all other universes after the first, to come into being. String theory and quantum mechanics, cannot explain these events. They exist only as theoretical mathematical equations that say they are possible. In the real universe, there is no evidence that any other universe actually exists.

Many modern scientists who reject a purposeful origin for the universe, state that millions or an infinite number of universes existed before ours. If we have an infinite number of other universes, it is certain that one just like ours, fine-tuned for life on a planet, would be possible.

What is not explained in this hypothesis, is exactly how all of these universes came into being and how they could produce our universe that has fine-tuned physical constants to make human life on earth a reality. The reason given is that with enough time, an eternity past, it is reasonable that a universe would begin.

The problem with this idea is that there is no evidence that any other universes have ever existed, except our own. There is no explanation for how purely intelligent actions resulted from immaterial substances. All of the scientific evidence we have today, proves that there was nothing material before our universe began. There was no space to put matter in, and no time to mark its duration. These hypothesis’ exist only as a mathematical equations which posit other universes are possible, not that any actually exist. What is not included in these mathematical calculations, is how impossible this theory really is.

If we are going to accept a mathematical impossibility by asserting the multiverse; we should also accept that a Being who created our universe, is far more probable. This is because our universe retains evidence of an intelligent Being as the source, by the complexity of fine-tuned constants that remain precisely set so that earth can support human life.

Physicist and Cosmologist Paul Davies confirmed that the likelihood a correct ratio of gravity to electromagnetism could have occurred by accident, as a 1-in-10^40 chance. The probability that this precise calibration could have occurred on its own would be like trying to hit a coin at the far end of the universe from earth with a single shot.[4]

When we consider the incredible accuracy required to allow the universe to begin with such precision, we realize that we are living in a universe that was specifically engineered for us.

There are 209 Fine-Tuned Constants that have taken place from -430 Plank Time, to the present day, which make human life on earth possible. No natural process can ever produce a fine-tuned result the first time. The tolerances for the precise balance of gravity and electromagnetism are so close, any alteration, will immediately result in a failure.

The premise of evolution and all natural processes, is lots of time, lots of failures. Over a wide expanse of time, successful results ensue, and build until a workable result is achieved.

In the parameters we find for our universe, these results were achieved the first time, and every fine-tuned constant was achieved the first time. If any of the 209 fine-tuned constants had failed to be precisely set during the expansion of the universe, the entire universe would have collapsed back upon itself and ended.

The scientific evidence of the fine-tuned constant, demonstrates that a mind was at work, knowing what these fine-tuned constants must be precisely set at, before the universe began. In essence, a written code in a workable program, that determined a success. We find this exact reality in the line-code that allows you to read this essay. Someone constructed a code that was known to work, before it was initiated, resulting in a successful outcome: a program that permits me to write this text, and you to read it.

Natural events are not caused by a code, they happen randomly and without foreknowledge.

The Universe Is The Greatest Miracle That Has Ever Happened

The Being who wrote the code which produced the universe, came to earth to show Himself to us. Men and women saw Him and they watched and listened while He demonstrated His creative power.

Matthew 15:30 “A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all.

Matthew 8:26-27 “Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”

John 11:43-44 “Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!

Isaac Newton viewed the evidence for God’s existence as self-evident by the presence of the universe itself. In his observance of all the scientific and mathematical absolutes of the Cosmos, he said, “the Creator cannot be denied in the presence of such a magnificent creation.” Newton found it preposterous that any intelligent person could imagine that the universe came into being without an unlimited intelligence as its cause. Newton came to these conclusions based on the evidence of science, mathematics, and astronomy.[5]

Isaac Newton observed comets and planets moving in concentric orbits from many different positions, and concluded that this would be impossible apart from the design and engineering of an intelligence. In Newton’s view, a transcendent Being of immense power created gravity to act on these planets and cause them to follow the same center point, ordered by the laws of physics.[6]

Albert Einstein demonstrated that gravity occurs as a result of space-time bending. In the final conclusion of his theories, Einstein confirms Newton’s judgment that orbits follow geodesic trajectories by design. In other words, both of these great men of science concluded that the universe has a design and a purpose.

Newton determined that without intervention from the Creator of the universe, the stars would collide with each other on a more frequent basis. By apparent design, God has limited the amount of motion that occurs in the universe from decay, due to viscosity and friction.[7] In many of Newton’s writings, he implies that the force of gravity was influenced by something immaterial—an intelligence.

“It is inconceivable that inanimate brute matter should, without the mediation of something else which is not material, operate upon and effect matter without mutual contact.”[8]

It was the conclusion of Newton that God was the force that kept the planets in orbit—as they could not sustain their motion by themselves.

“This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent Being.[9]

The First Verse In The Bible Reveals A God Of Miracles

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” ~Genesis 1:1

It was the intent of the miracles found in the Bible, to provide us first-hand testimony that there is One God who does exist. Before men understood the complexity and fine-tuned constants that make human life possible on earth, God spoke through David and reminded the world that evidence for God exists:

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.” ~Psalms 19:1-4

Atheists assert that the universe exists by a strictly natural processes. Atheists assert that no God was necessary to create the universe or human beings; all that exists happened by accident, by incredible fortuitous events. Because men and women of science have stated these things, people believe their opinions. Here is the problem: these atheist scientists cannot prove to you that the universe exists by a purely natural process. What can be proven by science is that the universe exists by events of nature that were precisely controlled to exact a specific outcome.

How God Created The Universe: Science And The Bible In Symmetry

In my backyard you will find a waterfall, stream, and pond. They look as though they are natural and happened as many others exist all over the earth. The pond in my backyard has Koi and Goldfish, living, growing, and prospering as fish do all over the earth. It would not be hard to imagine that what you find at my home, is a purely naturally occurring phenomenon.

The problem with this view is that when we closely examine what was required for my waterfall, stream, and pond to exist, we discover that intelligence was involved. A mind conceived the idea of a body of water and fish existing in my backyard. Intentional and engineered events were necessary for this naturally appearing material things to exist where they are, at this time.

I had to install an electric motor that drives a pump, which pushes water from the pond, through a filter that is engineered to remove harmful waste produced by the fish, and release beneficial byproducts through the waterfall, stream, and back into the pond. If these precise and finely calibrated material processes did not happen exactly as they have, the fish would die.

I know this because of trial and error over the process of time. Before I learned how to engineer and build a system that enables a process which allows my fish to live, I killed a lot of fish with the wrong process.

In order to believe the universe exists by a natural process, we would also have to accept that there were a lot of failures before earth existed and people could live here. The problem with this hypothesis is that our universe would never exist if it was by a process of trial and error. All of the scientific evidence we have observed, proves that every one of the fine-tuned processed that had to be set precisely the first time, happened the first time. There was no trial and error; there was no long process of time, or failures and successes, as with an evolutionary process.

This universe, or any universe cannot exist by an evolutionary process. Everything necessary to produce our universe, has to be right the first time, or the expansion of material that results, would quickly collapse back upon itself and no universe would result.

Everything that was necessary for a one-off event, happened exactly as it needed to, so that this universe and this earth, could exist. These are the facts of science.

You might think my waterfall, stream, and pond were there when the house was built, but I know that it was an engineered and closely controlled set of events that made them possible. Today we know that our universe presents us with this same evidence that what took place at the beginning of our universe, was closely controlled by an intelligent Being of infinite capacity, to exact an outcome that produced earth and human life.

First, there was nothing, then suddenly a tiny densely compacted particle of pure energy came into existence. Gravity and electromagnetism suddenly came into existence, with the laws of physics, and these permitted an expansion of matter in a precise pattern that would later result in the formation of first generation stars, supernovas, second generation stars that produce carbon, and finally earth with a carbon based human life form. And, Earth contains the precise 118 elements on the periodic table, that allows us to build and produce every good thing we need on earth.

How is it that the universe knew that we would need these exact elements to build cars, houses, business, furniture, fuel, food, and every other good thing that human beings need during their life? How kind an inanimate universe was to give us these things! Of course there is no possibility that we accidentally have exactly what we need to build all we have. This is only possible if a mind of infinite intelligence—a Being of infinite love—determined in advance that we would have all we need on earth when He formed earth.

In order for this formerly non-existent, tiny compacted particle of energy to explode and expand properly, a precise calibration of gravity and electromagnetism had to be perfect. These two did not exist before the universe commenced. There were no physical laws in existence which could order and govern the universe. Gravity and electromagnetism enables the pure energy that first existed, to be transformed into matter, and then expand at the right rate of velocity, in order to create first generation stars, second generation stars, and earth with people.

Gravity, electromagnetism and the laws of physics, were created simultaneously with the creation of the first events, exactly when they were required. No natural process can create essential elements, subsequent to the exact moment when they are needed. No natural process can create the laws of physics. Laws require a mind, with foreknowledge of what these laws will result in. These critical parts of the initial universe all came into existence simultaneously, independant of a natural process, and as a result of an engineered plan and purpose.

Balance Between The Electron And Proton

One important example of a fine-tuned universe that is understood as a critical requirement for life, is the correct ratio between the electron and a proton that is in every atom in the universe.

The ratio of mass between an electron and a proton is 1:1836, meaning that a proton is 1,836 times larger than an electron. Although there is a great degree of difference between the size of these two parts of an atom, both the electron and proton maintain the exact same electrical charge. With this massive difference in size, how is it possible that both still have the same electrical charge? It’s as if someone knew the precise size difference that was necessary before the first atom existed.

If the electrical charge of the electron is altered by just one part in 100 billion, the body of every human being on earth would explode.[10]

These are but a few of the hundreds of scientific facts of the universe that we know today, which prove that forethought, engineering, and extreme intelligence were required to cause this universe to begin and continue to exist. Man’s technical knowledge of life has grown exponentially as we have decoded the human genome, understood the operation of the simple cell, and explored the depths of the human mind. The greater our scientific knowledge of the universe, the greater our evidence, that God is the source of all that exists.

God Came To Earth Specifically To Proved His Existence, By The Miracles He Performed

If you ask many atheists how God could prove Himself to them, they will often say, “appear before me and do things that only God could do.” This is exactly what Jesus did in the narratives of the New Testament. The men who recorded the events of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, said they saw Him perform these miracles with their own eyes, 134 times.

  • Paul: 1 Corinthians 9:1: “Am I not an apostle? Haven’t I seen Jesus our Lord with my own eyes?
  • Peter: 1 Peter 1:16: “We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes.”
  • John: 1 John 1:1:”We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands.”
  • James, Paul, all the Apostles: 1 Corinthians 15:7: “Then Jesus was seen alive by James and later by all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him.”
  • Mary Magdalene: John 20:18: “Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!”

Jesus stated that His miracles were intended as evidence that He is God, and the Messiah whom all the prophets predicted.

“Of course, I have no need of human witnesses, but I say these things so you might be saved. John was like a burning and shining lamp, and you were excited for a while about his message. But I have a greater witness than John—my teachings and my miracles. The Father gave me these works to accomplish, and they prove that he sent me.” ~John 5:34-36

The Old Testament prophets stated that when the Messiah arrives on earth, He will be God living in the body of a man, performing miracles to prove His identity.

“Say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy your enemies. He is coming to save you.” And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug the ears of the deaf. The lame will leap like a deer, and those who cannot speak will sing for joy! Springs will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams will water the wasteland.” ~Isaiah 35:4-6

This verse from the prophet Isaiah was cited by Jesus when John the Baptist was in prison, and sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus if He really was the Messiah the prophets wrote about. Jesus told the disciples of John to go and tell him what they had seen Jesus do:

“John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?” Jesus told them, “Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen—the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me.” ~Matthew 11:2-6

The miracles that Jesus performed were intended by Him as evidence that He is the One whom the prophets predicted; God in the body of a man, able to make the blind see, the lame walk, and the deaf hear. These are the miracles that are recorded in the New Testament, by the men who saw Jesus do these things.

  • Matthew 9:27-30 “…Then their eyes were opened, and they could see!”[11]
  • Mark 8:22-25 “…His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly.”[12]
  • Luke 7:21 “…he restored sight to many who were blind.”[13]
  • John 9:1-7 “…So the man went and washed and came back seeing!”[14]

[15]

The miracles that God performed throughout the Old Testament were simply a continuation of the first and greatest miracle, when He created the universe. If we can believe the evidence of modern science, that God must exist in order for the universe to exist, then the first line in the Bible: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” give us sufficient reason to believe all the other miracles in the Bible are also true.

Moses instituted 22 miracles in the Old Testament. Jesus performed 40 miracles in the New Testament. Each were intended as evidence that God exists. Paul recounted all that Moses did as a preview of all that the Messiah would do when He came later:

“Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later. But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house.” ~Hebrews 3:5-6

The 40 Miracles Jesus Performed In The New Testament

Jesus performed 40 miracles and they are spread across all four gospels, one, in the book of Acts. These miracles are not concentrated only in John’s narrative, but consistent testimony by all four Gospel writers. • Matthew: 23 of 40 miracles
  • Mark: 24 of 40 miracles
  • Luke: 17 of 40 miracles
  • John: 9 of 40 miracles

The power of miracles was an important sign for Messiah, as described by the prophets of the Old Testament. When we see that Jesus performed 40 miracles during His time here on earth, we are struck by the fact that there are so many. If it was the intent of the New Testament to deceive the world into believing that Jesus was God when He was not, then why are there so many miracles, by all four writers, with such diverse circumstances and people who are healed?

The testimony of the eyewitnesses who penned the New Testament, comes to us through 24,593 extant manuscript copies. These manuscripts are dated from 175-225 A.D. The texts of the New Testament which validates the miracles of Jesus as proof that He is God, was preserved by God for us, so that we would have an intellectual basis to place our faith in Jesus for our salvation, and no other.

[11] Matthew 9:27-30 “After Jesus left the girl’s home, two blind men followed along behind him, shouting, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” They went right into the house where he was staying, and Jesus asked them, “Do you believe I can make you see?” “Yes, Lord,” they told him, “we do.” Then he touched their eyes and said, “Because of your faith, it will happen.” Then their eyes were opened, and they could see!”

[12] Mark 8:22-25 When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus, and they begged him to touch the man and heal him. Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then, spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?” The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.” Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly.”

[13] Luke 7:21 “At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.”

[14] John 9:1-7 “As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?” “It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him. We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work. But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.” Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes. He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!”

  1. Hi Robert

I just want to thank you for your posts. I have to admit that sometimes I flag and my prayers seem weak but your posts are an encouragement.

Unfortunately, I can’t get your books in the UK on Amazon but have read One Gospel.

    Thanks again.

    God bless

    • Steven,

Great to hear from you. I understand the difficulties of remaining strong in Christ, I have also struggled over the years. I am confident that you will make it fully into the presence of the Lord with me, and all others who are not strong enough on our own to make it to heaven.

Thankfully the Spirit of Christ who lives in us, will preserve, equip, and encourage us until the day He comes for us.

      Bless you dear brother,

      Rob
