10 Reasons Why Atheists Will Not Believe In God

After many years of conversing with atheists, it has become clear what the real reasons are for their unwillingness to believe that God exists.

Although conversations with those who do not believe in God will eventually venture into their intellectual objections to the Christian Gospel, in truth, their objections are a camouflage for the true barriers of their heart.

The following list is the result of my own observations of those who have told me the many reasons why they do not believe in God. After having had the opportunity to try and get to know the persons who call themselves or live by the defining definition of an atheist, these are the conclusion that I have arrived at.

Of course, as people are many and diverse, so also are the reasons for why they choose not to believe in God. We cannot place every person in specific categories, for the true motivations of a persons heart are know only to that person and to God.

These 10 reasons why many atheists will not believe in God, are most often, the principle and true motivations for their confession—although they will tell you that they are not. It is for the person who is still searching for answers to the deeper meaning and purpose of life—that these 10 reasons are written. For those who will not ever change their mind, irrespective of evidence or logic, these 10 points will make no difference at all. In fact, it is doubtful if those who have a propensity towards remaining an atheist for their entire life, will do more than a cursory scan of this article.

10 Reasons Why Atheists Will Not Believe In God:

1. They simply choose not to believe.

It is not for a lack of evidence that the atheist will not believe. We should never assume that they cannot believe, it is clearly because they choose not to believe. I have presented clear and empirical evidence for the existence of God, many times and in a majority of cases—most atheists I have spoken to, will not accept such evidence. In nearly 40 years, not once has any atheists ever stipulated that any single piece of evidence was compelling.

This remarkable fact leaves the reasonable person with only one conclusion: the atheist is not searching for evidence to believe.

According to the rule of law for determining whether evidence is reliable; when is a point proven by evidence?[1]

A.) “A proposition of fact is proved, when its truth is established by competent and satisfactory evidence.”
B.) “By competent evidence is meant such as the nature of the thing to be proved requires; and by satisfactory evidence is meant that amount of proof, which ordinarily satisfies an unprejudiced mind, beyond any reasonable doubt.”
C.) “The circumstances which will amount to this degree of proof can never be previously defined; the only legal test to which they can be subjected is their sufficiency to satisfy the mind and conscience of a man of common prudence and discretion, and so to convince him, that he could venture to act upon that conviction in matters of the highest concern and importance to his own interest.”

Notice the key to evidence being sufficient to satisfy the mind and conscience of a man, is determined by the willingness of an unprejudiced mind to receive such evidence.

This is clearly the insurmountable obstacle for the atheist: their mind is precluded against all evidence, regardless of its integrity, or conclusiveness.

2. A desire to continue in their chosen lifestyle.

One of the desirable aspects of atheism, from their viewpoint, is the elimination of all accountability for their life—to God. In other words, they are seeking to live without guilt, and regret which they view as being placed upon them by God or religion.

In reality, this cannot work. The human conscience will not permit a person to cast off all feelings of guilt. This knowledge is hardwired into the soul of man and he cannot escape it.

Only those who have continually seared their conscience, over a very long period of time—by ignoring their guilt; can achieve some resemblance of freedom from that guilt. These individuals are known as “sociopaths.” Not all sociopaths are antisocial, nor do they develop a mindset to harm other human beings without regret. However, all those who operate without a conscience, suffer from the inability to empathize with the feelings and perspectives of other human beings.

I do not personally believe that the majority of those who claim to be an atheist, have reached the point of becoming a sociopath—without a conscience. I believe that everyday, most atheists know in their heart that God exists, but they continue to maintain their resistance to Him.

This is observed by their unwillingness to accept any fact which supports the premise that a point is supported by particular evidence, when those facts conflict with a persons predetermined mindset.

3. Unwillingness to investigate facts for themselves.

A person who has a proclivity towards a particular mindset, is precluded from a desire to investigate facts, because they simply do not care to gain any further knowledge. These persons are relatively comfortable with their position and seek only to defend it, rather than explore its credibility.

At least in public, most persons who define themselves as an atheist—regardless of how they define the term “atheist,” itself, are not willing to seriously and objectively consider facts which might change their mind. They are deeply entrenched in their belief system and are almost always—unwilling to seek a change from those positions.

There are a few cases of intellectually honest people who have determined in advance that they would follow the evidence where it leads, and have later changed their minds about God.[2] For the most part, the general atheist population, although it is a very small representation of the total population,[3] will not consider any evidence that would countermand their position.

4. Hurt or disappointment.

A seldom discussed component of personal conviction in the minds of many atheists, is the reality of a past hurt or disappointment—which has caused their unwillingness to believe that God exists.

There are many people, who over the course of their life, meet an individual who has claimed to be a Christian—who has exhibited behavior that is contrary to their particular belief, and caused other people to discount God altogether.

An enduring fact of life is that one of the leading causes of atheism is Christianity. Not that Jesus is the point of stumbling, but rather those who claim to follow him. Many people attribute the behavior of a person to the character of the God they claim to believe in. Forgetting that the Christian Gospel clearly declares that Jesus came into the world to save “sinners,” not the righteous. It is the very worst of the world that Jesus is most appealing to. The Christian life in following Jesus is frequently imperfect and lacking the basic qualities of love, patience, humility, and forgiveness. Those who are trying to follow Jesus will never be perfect in this life, although they should endeavor, constantly, to be more like Jesus in all their behavior.

It should also be understood that many people who take the name of “Christian,” are frauds. For reasons of personal financial gain or to achieve a position of authority or power, many individuals will label themselves a follower of Christ, without this fact being true.

It should be understood that the person of Christ is perfect in every way. Those who have taken the time to personally explore the words and actions of Jesus are always amazed at who He is. There has never been another human being who so perfectly illustrates the desirable qualities that most all human beings admire, respect, and desire for their own lives. Jesus is not like those who follow Him, who are often imperfect and a very poor representation of Him. Jesus is always perfect in every way. No one who has ever sought to follow Him, has ever been disappointed with Him.

See the article: “God is not a Christian.”

5. Personal hatred of Jesus.

This is a subject that Jesus Himself spoke of. Jesus said that the reason that people will not come to Him and believe upon Him, is due to their hatred of Him.

Jesus said that the world hates Him because He exposes its sin and describes all our works as “evil.”

John 7:7 “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil.”

John 15:18-19 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.

Why is Jesus hated so vehemently? Because He reminds men that they are sinners, in need of a Savior.

6. Love of sin

People would rather be left alone in the lives they have chosen and not be told that they are accountable to God, to whom they owe their existence. This is the real reason that men do not repent and submit their lives to Jesus: They love their sins.

John 3:19-20 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

There is no lack of evidence for the existence of God, only the absence of human will to believe in Him. People love their sins more than they love God.

7. Fear of losing friends.

For many people, their entire life is centered around their friends. A person’s personal identity often originates from their community of friends and associates.

It is imagined by some people that upon changing their mind from unbelief in God—to belief, they will immediately lose most or all of their friends. This would be a devastating loss that is unimaginable to many people.

The fact is, a true friend is one who loves us at all times. If we change, those who are genuinely our friends, will love us and accept us no matter what happens to us. If we find that people will only love and accept us when we meet their personal expectations, these persons are not true friends.

Many of those who turn to a new relationship with God, through Jesus Christ—find that a majority of their friends will no longer associate with them. Some will simply state that they are very happy for your new faith, but they are not personally interested in God. Others will not say anything, while distancing themselves from you and choosing not to associate with you, over time.

A few of those who were real friends from the start—will observe your new life and over time, begin to explore for themselves what Jesus is all about.

Those who find that Jesus is the missing element that they were searching for all of their life—find that they will encompass an entirely new group of friends. Although these new companions are not perfect, they will exhibit the most necessary trait that assures they know Jesus personally: Love. The love that true followers of Jesus have for each other, is the emblem of certainly that they are genuine followers of Christ. Without love being present in the life of one who claims to follow Jesus, their confession is not genuine. Jesus said that the world will know that we are His followers, by the love that we have for one another.

John 13:35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

8. Fear of persecution from friends and family.

This item is closely linked to the former point. Not only do many people turn away from God because of their fear in losing their friends or family—they also fear persecution from the same.

Many new believers go through an extended period of time where their friends and family make fun of them for their new faith. They will begin to call you by nicknames and describe you as a religious person or “Jesus Freak.” Others will silently observe you and see if what you claim to believe will make any difference in your life.

Over time and consistency in following Jesus, those who formerly made light of your new faith—will begin to admire and respect you. Although a great number of our former friends or current family members may never believe in Jesus themselves, they will regard you as sincere and committed to your ideals.

If we are unwilling to suffer the loss of family and friends in order to follow Jesus, then there is something seriously lacking in our confession. In order to believe in the One who has created us and given us life, even dying for all our sins, we should be willing to give up anything and anyone to follow Him.

Matthew 10:37 (Jesus speaking) He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

Why this strict requirement of Jesus? Because He was willing to give up everything—Himself, in order to make our salvation a reality—it is reasonable and right that we are willing to do the same. Would you not also require a total and full commitment from your husband or wife, forsaking all others, remaining faithful and committed to you, no matter what?

One of the leading causes of marriage difficulty is when a spouse allows their family or friends to come between a husband and wife. Although we love our family, we cannot place them before our spouse, or God, it simply will not work.

9. Fear of financial loss or career status.

Particularly in cases where an academic title is in place, the confession of a new faith in God or His Bible, is great cause for concern. The people who are connected to education, science and government, often have very little or no tolerance for those who have deeply held faith in God. Although there are laws which protect religious discrimination, we are all aware that those who are in positions of authority over us—can make our careers very tenuous, if they desire.

Again, we must ask ourselves what is more important than knowing the One who created the universe and has given us life?

It may be that because of a person’s new willingness to follow Jesus, God may have an entirely new and exciting career planned for you. We really have no idea, the wonderful things that God has prepared for those who love Him. His plans for us, are far better and immensely more satisfying than our own plans.

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

10. Misunderstanding or Simple lack of knowledge.

I have listened to and read, the comments of many leading atheists and concluded that there is nothing in their objections which would preclude them from trusting in Jesus Christ. Most of the objections that the atheist has, are rooted in misunderstanding, a lack of information, or further need for clarity of the subject.

In truth, the Christian Gospel and the person of Jesus Christ, make perfect sense.

Some of the ideas about God and the misconceptions that people have, are due to a lack of knowledge. From the cross, Jesus cried out to the Father—to forgive those who had placed Him upon the cross, because they did not really understand what they were doing.

Luke 23:34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

In this simple statement by Jesus, He revealed two important points about God:

One: God understands your unbelief and He has the solutions for it.

Two: What you are currently thinking and living out in your life—in opposition to God, are the result of your not knowing or understanding what the truth is.

Jesus said that He is the way, the truth, and the Life. He said that if you will come to Him and seek to understand what He is saying to you—this truth will set you free. You will have a whole new outlook and attitude about your life, and the lives of everyone around you.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 5:40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

In truth, you are the only one who can change your life. God will not force you to believe in Him. He is coming to you now, as a friend and someone who deeply cares for you and loves you. He was willing to give up His life, for you, so that you might be able to receive all the good things that He has planned for you.

Will you come to Him now?

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. —John 3:16-17

In conclusion:

The majority of atheists, after reading this list of 10, will deny that any of the above is the cause of their atheism. They will assert that it is simply due to a lack of evidence, that they do not believe. The evidence is clear and certain and undeniable. It is because the atheists simply chooses to deny or not believe the evidence, that is the real cause (and many others) of their unbelief.

It is my hope and life’s work to make Jesus known to as many people as I can, before my days here on earth are concluded. I hope to see you there, in that bright and beautiful city, where no one will ever die, and no one will hurt or kill anyone, ever again.

All this became possible for any person—because of Jesus.

  1. Cute. Each of these 10 reasons pertains to an emotional or moral failing on the part of atheists. Why does Rob only mention these? Because he does not have the academic qualifications to deal with the intellectual issues, of which there are many. So he writes a whole article excluding all of that stuff, and focusing only on the personal. Shameful, really.

    • Steven,

The article is written to expose the empty excuses that atheists use to deny God. If you have an actual impeachment for what I wrote, then please present it. I would love to see your refutation of these points.

      • Steven Baughman: You are free to give your opinion. The standard Atheist tome is 100 pages.
I will read it if you write it. Please

Mr. Robinson covers much ground in what he wrote. Steven, you can angle your disagreement
        the way you want.
