Is It Logically Impossible For God And Evil To Coexist?

If God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and morally perfect, why would He allow evil to exist and cause suffering? [1]

For example: “Since God is alleged to be Omniscient, He would know when evil is happening, and if He is Morally perfect, He would want to eliminate it. However, if evil exists, then God doesn’t have the power, knowledge, or desire to stop it.” [2]

The Bible states that God is:

  1. Omnipotent: He is capable of doing anything
  2. Omniscient: He is capable of knowing all things
  3. Omnipresent: He is capable of being everywhere at the same time

These three things being true about God, it is alleged that with these powers, it is logically impossible for God and evil to coexist.

The problem with these ideas is that they are made out of ignorance of the true facts that concern God and this present world

  1. When God created the universe, earth, and man, the texts state that everything God made, “is very Good.” [3]
  2. This requires that things we find on earth that are not good were not created by God.

When we examine the texts of the Bible in recounting for us, the creation of man and his fall, we discover three important facts

  1. God made man in His image and likeness. As God is morally perfect in every regard, man was also created morally perfect. [4]
  2. Man became imperfect by his choice to embrace evil over the Good that God created for him to enjoy. [5]
  3. Sin was the result of man’s rebellion, and sin brought evil, sickness, suffering, and death to earth. [6]

Immediately after Adam sinned and brought sin into the world, God promised him a Savior who would come into the world and destroy sin, evil, sickness, suffering, and death

  1. Genesis 3:15 is the promise by God to send a Messiah who would crush the head of satan, the one who caused Adam’s fall into sin, and the destruction of the perfect world God created. [7]
  2. The New Testament records the arrival of this Messiah, known to us historically as Jesus of Nazareth. [8]
  3. Jesus has always been the Eternal God, the Creator of all that exists, but when He came to earth to destroy the work of satan and redeem all those who wanted salvation, He was born as a human being. [9]
  4. Jesus lived a sinless life as a man, and this qualified Him to die for the sins of the whole world, fulfill the promise of Genesis 3:15, and save those from judgment for their sin—everyone who placed their lifelong trust in Him for their salvation. [10]
  5. The Bible states, in 1 John 3:8b, that Jesus’ death on the cross, “destroyed the works of the devil,” that brought sin, evil, sickness, suffering, and death to earth. [11]
  6. The Bible states in 2 Corinthians 4:4 that, “satan is the god of this present world.” After Adam chose sin rather than obedience to God, he forfeited the dominion of earth that God had given to him. It was at that time that satan obtained dominion of the earth and became, “the god of this world.” [12]
  7. The Bible states in Revelation 11:15, that after Jesus completes His judgment of this present world, “The kingdoms of this world will become the kingdoms of our Lord and  of His Christ.” [13]

These facts being in evidence, we can conclude that God has done everything possible to eliminate evil and stop human suffering

Genuine love between persons is only possible if a choice is given. God created human life in His Image, with the same privilege and power that God has: the right of self-determination.

When God created Adam He also gave him the ability and right to choose whether he would love and obey God, or rebel and choose evil. Although God knew the choice Adam would make before He created him, without this choice, Adam could never love God genuinely.

If Adam had no choice but to obey God, then he could also never enter into a true loving relationship with God. We must have a choice in the relationships we have. If we are forced into loving someone and doing what they demand, this is narcissism at its foundation.

When God allowed Adam to choose and he made a choice that caused his death and the death of all who would come after him, it also allowed God to make His own choice, and come to earth as one of us—to die for our sins, and give us the opportunity to be redeemed by the love of God.

The Alleged Logical Conflict That Evil Cannot Exist If God Exists, Is Proven False

God could allow people to choose good or evil, and then work to redeem those who make the wrong choice. This is what the narrative of the Bible demonstrates.

Romans 5:8-11: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more than, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”

God Has destroyed evil and determined a final judgment when all evil, sin, suffering, and death will end. When we read the Book of Revelation, which describes the end of these horrors of human life, we see that God has appointed a time when Jesus will return to earth and this present evil world will come to an end.

Right now we have the opportunity to learn and understand what has happened to cause the evil and suffering in our world and place ourselves into the plan of salvation that God offers the world.

Jesus came to earth and by His death on the cross, broke the power that sin, and evil had in our life. Death has been defeated. Evil has been defeated. For this present time, we can come to Jesus in sorrow over our own sins, and ask Him to forgive us. If we do this with sincerity, God will hear our prayer, take away our sins, and make us perfect in His sight.’

Everyone who does this will live in the new and perfect world that Jesus will create after He judges and destroys this present evil world.

You are invited to join this family and live in a world that God intended for all of us. There will be no more tears, no more death, no more suffering. For the former things will pass away and God will make all things new.

See the verse-by-verse commentary in The Book of Revelation that describes the end of all evil and suffering and the new and perfect world that is coming soon.

[2] Statements made by critics of God and the Bible regarding the alleged contradiction of evil being present in the world, while God is stated as existing. The actual source of this statement is unknown.
[3] Genesis 1:31: “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”
[4] Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
[5] 1. Genesis 2:15-17: “Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

2. Genesis 3:1-7 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'” Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

[8] Luke 24:44-48: “Then Jesus said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ You are witnesses of all these things. See all the Messianic Prophecies
[9] 1. Hebrews 2:14-15: “Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

2. Philippians 2:5-11:  “Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it something to hold on to, to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

[13] Revelation 11:15: “Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”

I agree that forcing someone to love isn’t how love works. But the blame isn’t on the person not loving God; it’s on God not being love-able. If God wants people to love him, the ball’s in his court.

    • So you just assume that God is not love. How exactly can he not love you ? Are there not people in your life that God created just like you, that you love and they love you ? Who give you that feeling inside of you to love someone ? Who give you the mind to ask these questions about love and how you are to react ? Who enables you to breath and enjoy this earth ? Who allows you to have a family to love you ? It is the same God who yes, has the ball in his court and wants you to enjoy his love that he shows you and those around you love everyday.
